We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Guevara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what role has risk played in your life or career?
We work with Fred VanVleet of the Houston Rockets who has a mantra, an ethos that embodies the concept of risk taking. “Bet on Yourself.” Although I bet on myself far before I met FVV, I wanted to share that because like minded individuals always find themselves to share the same space, same success. We are currently in our 2nd season working together and will continue to build over the course of our careers. My risk-takers story starts during covid time. My wife and I just moved back to LA and we had a choice to make. We were offered a lucrative contract to work with an NBA all star full time or decline start from scratch, “bet on ourselves” and figure it out in LA. After long talks and discussions with other friends and family, we elected to stay in LA. It was one of the best decisions we made: since then, we bought a house in West Hollywood, launched a training app for basketball players called GBG Hoops, and served over 20 NBA players since then. Betting on yourself paid off.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our off court basketball training app is called GBG Hoops. It answers one of the most common questions we get, “How can I train with Coach Mike G?” Due to time and resource constraints, it’s simply not possible to fulfill all of the training inquiries and we were sayin “no” to many people. With GBG Hoops, we no longer have to say NO to anybody and can train people all over the world. For $30/month an athlete or basketball lover can now access our training program used by many of the top players in the NBA and Euroleague.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For pizza we’re definitely going to Mozza in Hollywood. A huge Jamaican/Caribbean food fan so after that we’re going to a Taste of the Caribbean also in Hollywood. After that, I’m going to Genwa in mid Wilshire because Korean food is a staple in my diet. And LA is all about the parties. We love to dance, so we’re hitting up an Afro Beats Party, but also salsa at El floridita which is a restaurant turned salsa club. And for movement, definitely hiking and sprinting at Runyon and playing basketball at Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to use this space to shoutout my wife Hadaya Turner. I was always told that “The One” is only one that truly elevates you and brings out the best in you. She and I run our online training app called GBG Hoops which has 600 monthly subscribers and counting. She is the sole reason why this company exists and with our expertise combined we have created something very special. She is extremely skilled in all things production and creating for digital mediums and we have joined forces to be quite a formidable couple!
