We had the good fortune of connecting with Milan Costich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Milan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance has been critical in my journey with Prevail. We recently celebrated 9 years in business and opened our second location in the N. Hollywood Arts District. In order to get to this point, it helps to have a marathon mindset. There will be times where it’s absolutely critical to sprint and even sprint some distances that might feel impossible (COVID), but I couldn’t have nor would I have wanted to sprint all those 9 years. I look at work life balance over a few decades. I don’t strive to have the perfectly balanced day because depending on what phase of life your business is in, the demand on your time will vary. Instead of consistently having a balanced day, I look to have a balanced year. Admittedly, the first three to four years of Prevail, I worked a lot. I was starting a brand new business with very little funds and even less experience. In order to have a shot at making a mark in the boutique fitness space in LA, I needed to learn, grow, and perform at a higher level, so during this period my focus was 100% on building the business. Now at this stage in Prevail’s lifecycle, I make it a point to block out two of my work days, so that I can work from remote locations that inspire me and allow me time to read, reflect, write, and even be bored. From that space is where my creativity thrives and my vision for the company comes together.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Prevail Boxing specializes in delivering a killer workout through the discipline of boxing. I find it more enjoyable to develop and learn a skill-set while exercising, rather than a traditional workout. Having purpose behind the sweat makes a big difference, especially when it comes to consistency. Our curriculum and how we balance the blend of skill-work and sweat-work is what sets us apart. In addition, we put a strong emphasis on building community and customer service. Boxing can be intimidating to start, but I’m proud that we’ve introduced boxing to tens of thousands of people for the first time. Our mission is to empower through the art of boxing.
Has it been easy? Definitely not. It’s been a series of challenges that I couldn’t have predicted. But, the pressure of rising to meet the challenges and expanding existing abilities has been rewarding. Early on, I threw grit and hard work at my challenges, but over time I’ve learned to lean on others as well. It helps to have a great team.
At Prevail we believe in pursuing excellence. It’s not an easy thing to do, but doing it with a community helps.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Prevail for a workout. Malibu for the coastal view and drive.
Gigi’s for dinner and a drink.
Floatlab for the journey within.
Voda Spa for sauna and ice plunge.
Terroni for an italian dinner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother for her example of integrity and hard work. As well as her belief in me. Coach Lolo aka Lawrence, he’s been with me since day one of Prevail. He’s the definition of “ride or die”.
My entire team at Prevail, they are exceptional. You can’t force people to care, but the Prevail team cares about its community, about boxing, and living a healthier life.
Prior to starting Prevail, I worked in entertainment for three years. I consider that time my professional bootcamp. The time demand, the pressure to perform, and the sink or swim mentality helped bring out my best. A shootout to all my bosses and mentors from this period in my life. Thank you Theresa, Dan, and Tom.
And of course to my girlfriend Jessica.
