We had the good fortune of connecting with Ming Cheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ming, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As a multimedia visual artist, my driving force in creation has always been the desire to communicate with others. I believe that even the most private artwork is never just a one-way transmission of information—it inevitably resonates with the audience in some way, sparking thoughts and emotions. This indirect yet profound interaction through my work often makes me feel incredibly fortunate to be an artist.

Visual communication knows no boundaries. Because it is so free, offering countless possibilities to engage with others through sight and other senses, I am always thrilled and filled with anticipation at the prospect of being seen and heard throughout my creative career. This excitement for communication, along with the identity rooted in creation, is something no other job could ever offer me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has taken me through a wide range of creative disciplines—graphic design, exhibition design, illustration, photography… My nonlinear exploration of art and my openness to different mediums has enabled me to develop multiple skills and apply them to the projects I want to create.

In visual arts, most elements are interconnected. You can incorporate illustration into brand design or shoot your own photographs in a specific style to feature in an experimental zine. Throughout the creative process, I have never imposed limitations on mediums. Instead, I actively apply my knowledge across disciplines, allowing ideas to take shape in the most fitting form.

My eagerness to learn new skills keeps me excited about every project I take on. I often face challenges—especially technical ones—that push me to pick up new techniques to bring my ideas to life. But when I finally see a finished piece that brings together everything I’ve learned from different fields, the sense of accomplishment is incredible. It’s not just about the final result—it’s also about the thrill of learning something new and pushing my creative limits along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a theater-loving New Yorker, I love taking my friends to see some bold, experimental musicals and plays in the town. The Public Theater consistently produces incredible works, Such as Hamilton and Suffs. One of my most memorable experiences there was Gatz, a seven-hour play where a group of office workers gradually starts reading The Great Gatsby out loud—until, before you know it, the entire novel has unfolded on stage in the most captivating way.

If I’m with friends who are into contemporary art, I’d take them to the Whitney Museum in Chelsea to check out the latest exhibitions and explore their extensive collection of Edward Hopper’s works. Afterward, we’d stop by Chelsea Market for some tacos and chocolate before spending a relaxing afternoon strolling along the High Line and the Little Island.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my career, I have been lucky to receive support and encouragement from those around me. My friends are always there for me, and their diverse perspectives have been a continuous source of creative inspiration in my life. Above all, I am most grateful to my mother, who has always loved and encouraged me unconditionally. She never gave up on me, even though I didn’t become a doctor or a lawyer.
