We had the good fortune of connecting with Mister JT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mister, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My main thing is, I wanted to pursue a whole creative career doing what I love because of my mother. I’m a singer, songwriter; I dabble in writing raps as well. My mom used to also be a singer back in the early 90’s, and I just wanted to basically pick up where she left off and continue the legacy. Plus, every time I sing or perform, someway somehow I managed to put a smile on people’s faces. And it always feels good to know that whatever creative outlet I was a part of, I was doing something right. I feel like it’s important to understand the true power of affecting others just by doing exactly what you love. It makes me feel like I have an actual voice, and I’d like to continuously speak my thoughts in hopes to eventually change the world one song at a time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been singing my whole life. I’m now 29 years old, and I’ve just started taking myself as a serious artist- I’d say in the past 5 years. I’ve always been around friends that perform often, even went to school for music. Nothing was really that difficult. Challenging? Absolutely. It was just a matter of creating a routine and mastering discipline. I’ve learned that it’s okay to be 100% yourself, and it’s okay to make mistakes along the way. I also learned that I have to always stay calm, no matter what life throws at my way. It’s the only way I can actually obtain some kind of peace. And I want to be able to spread love and/or awareness throughout my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I genuinely don’t have that many favorite places, but ideally if I were to stretch it out like an actual vacation, I would probably head to Washington Square Park as one of my go-to spots. It’s a pretty chill location. I’d also invite my friends to certain shows made by other mutual music associates. One of my favorite places is the Secret Pour, there’s always a cypher going on. I also recommend the Nighthorse Bar, because of the live shows, and it brings in a heavy crowd on a good day. If it was in the summer, I’d go to Union Square on a Friday night for an event called Legendary Cyphers. It’s basically an open platform for all kinds of artists to sharpen their (usually it would be) freestyling skills, and express themselves through hip hop culture. Anything else is a matter of what my friends would like. I’d definitely go to any pizza spot in New York; besides Italy of course, in my opinion, New York has the best pizza all around. I might be biased because I’m from the Bronx, but it’s definitely a staple.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely shoutout my good friend Aja Adam for putting me on to a few outlets. She’s always been someone that’s passionate about the craft itself. It inspires me everyday. Also wanna shoutout my brother Modius for always being a day-one friend. We’ve been friends ever since high school, we started music together. Fast forward, fifteen years later, and we’re not letting up! And I also wouldn’t be even half the person I am without him.
