We had the good fortune of connecting with Monti Bianchi Performance Wellness and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monti Bianchi Performance Wellness, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As performance wellness therapists initially working in a traditional way, we noticed a lot of common themes coming up in our sessions, one of which was the lack of community and accessibility for mental health tools and resources in the performing arts community. Further, the standards, practices, and mindset of the industry are often in opposition with good mental health principles. For example, it is often encouraged to maintain a poor work-life balance, abide by unhealthy body/beauty standards, conflate one’s worth with their profession, engage in toxic power dynamics, and buy into the “show must go on” mentality, damaging personal boundaries, self-awareness, and empowerment. As artists ourselves, we understand the unique needs of this population. As therapists, we have the awareness, experience, and training to bring it all together comprehensively and efficiently. Thus, we set out to provide accessible and flexible tools, resources, and community for performing artists.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our specific expertise and unique offerings set us apart from others. We are not only artists ourselves but are trained specifically in Performance Wellness techniques. We offer flexible products and services based on individual needs. We just launched our heART STUDIO membership, which offers real-time and non-real-time support, self-healing mini courses, and a supportive community. In the past, we both struggled with performance anxiety, creative blocks, poor self-esteem, and tough inner critics. Our personal journeys in healing these challenges, our individual experience working with artists, and our shared vision to go beyond traditional styles of healing, brought us together to create Monti Bianchi Performance Wellness.

Some of the lessons we have learned along our personal and professional journeys are:

– You are the expert on you. Just because something is good and healing for someone else, it does not mean it’s good for you. You have to learn to be your best expert, advocate, and cheerleader.
– You define what being an “artist” means in your existence, no one else really gets to do that, no matter how much they try to convince you otherwise.
– Showing up is more than half the battle.
– If you look at your challenges as adaptive survival skills instead of personal defects (e.g. “lazy”), you can change your life.
– Learning to see your inner life as an “inner society” will teach you so much about your own behavior and how to change what does not work.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The late Louise Montello, founder of the Montello Method for Performance Wellness, was our mentor and inspiration. We were so transformed through her methods that we decided to pay it forward and utilize them to help other people. Also, we are grateful to the therapists who kept her organization going after her passing. You can visit them at perfomancewellnessinc.org
