We had the good fortune of connecting with Monty Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monty, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is a natural part of life. You have to understand the risk of your choices and implement multiple layers of mitigation to minimize that risk. Financially those who take the risk get the rewards. (But, you only hear about the ones where it worked!)

I diversified my financial portfolio a few years back with Crypto Currencies. I risked a significant amount and received significant returns. This was the seed money for the purchase of property on one of California’s most known roads, the Pacific Coast Highway. The thought was to mitigate the volatility risk of Crypto with real estate.

I do the same in my personal life. I mitigate the risk of having a single employer by diversifying my skills. I have a full time 9-5. I officiate college football. I started a niche podcast (unofficiallounge.com). Finally I created PCH STREET, an inclusive Central Coast California Wine Lounge and Hair Salon brand in historic Old Town Lompoc, CA.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The fact that I am the heart of the revitalization of a small city sets this business apart from others. In the middle of the pandemic while multiple businesses shuttered and failed. I purchased property and renovated a building that sat vacant for 2+ years.

The PCH STREET brand gives a future focus to a community in the near future, a currently vacant adjacent lot will be transformed from weeded to: A showcase of Central Coast craft brewing and wines. The Inspiration was drawn from traditional Bavarian-style neighborhood beer gardens, which are outdoor taverns where beer and local foods are served. The design will use environmentally friendly, sustainably repurposed intermodal shipping containers, providing a contemporary look and feel.

The excitement of revitalizing my community is key. The revitalization is inclusive to many around me. I am providing commerce and jobs to members of my community.

The biggest opportunities to learn are coming from trial and error. I attempt to learn and adjust quickly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone landed at LAX and I would bring them up the coast and stop in Santa Barbara CA. Then head over the hill to the Chumash Casino Resort and Solvang. I would then bring them to Lompoc CA and watch a Space X rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Making sure to stop into PCH STREET for wine, beer, food trucks and an outdoor craft market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I swim in many different ponds.

In the football officiating pond I would have to thank Retired NFL official #62 Charles “Chuck” Stewart and fellow podcast teammates Ashante Jordan and Cravonne Barrett they have been instrumental in navigating the highest levels of football.

In my 9-5 I would have to thank my bosses John Ormond and Ken Esparza for allowing me the flexibility to pursue outside opportunities.

In business I would thank the Women’s Economic Ventures team of Santa Barbara California for the mentorship opportunities they provide at no cost.
