We had the good fortune of connecting with Muhan Yao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Muhan, how does your business help the community?
As a motion designer, I often create promos, explainer videos, and animation for advertisements. I believe that what I am doing could help the community or the world. Motion design is often used in advocacy campaigns and social impact initiatives. By creating visually compelling animations, designers can raise awareness about important issues, promote social change, and inspire action within communities. It is also a key element in various forms of entertainment, including films, television, and online content. It enhances storytelling, captivates audiences, and provides enjoyment to the audience. In the business world, motion design plays a crucial role in marketing and branding strategies. Engaging animations can help businesses convey their messages effectively, build brand identity, and connect with their target audience.
I believe that motion design is an impactful medium that can contribute to education, advocacy, entertainment, business, and cultural expression. Its ability to convey information in a visually compelling manner makes it a valuable tool for positive change to the community of the world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hello, I’m Muhan (Ellie) Yao, a freelance motion designer from Taiwan. My artwork has a unique creative approach characterized by gradients, noise, a playful cartoonish style, and a touch of nostalgia. My background in chemical engineering, music, and motion design has equipped me with robust problem-solving skills and a keen sense of rhythm in animation. Mastering various software, including the Adobe Creative Suite and Cinema 4D, allows me to bring my ideas to life in different formats.
Specializing in 2D motion graphics using After Effects, I often integrate frame-by-frame animation and 3D techniques into projects like explainer videos, personal works, and commercials. On a personal note, my appreciation for diverse music genres and a strong affinity for memes and comedies inspire me to infuse creativity and humor into my projects.
My motion design journey began during my senior year of college when I was uncertain about pursuing a career in chemical engineering. Delving into animation and motion design opened up new possibilities, prompting me to take self-learning seriously. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I applied to graduate programs in the United States, eventually enrolling at the School of Visual Arts for Motion Graphics.
Two years of academic learning and work experience resulted in significant personal growth. Through internships and freelancing, I gained insights into animation industry roles and production processes. Despite initial struggles adapting to a new environment, I returned to school with practical experience and newfound confidence. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the support and inspiration that propelled me to step out of my comfort zone, ultimately shaping the artist I aspire to be. The challenges and pressure were significant, but the experience has taught me the value of sharing, supporting, and communicating with others. I appreciate those who have been instrumental in my growth.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to extend a heartfelt shoutout to my family, whose unwavering support has been a constant throughout my journey. A special mention goes to my sister Megan Yao, whose inspiration fueled the narrative of my thesis. I am deeply grateful to SVA, its faculty, and my thesis group peers for fostering an environment that not only facilitated my academic and creative growth but also provided essential emotional support. A huge thanks to my dedicated teachers and mentors, Adam Meyers, who guided me through two years of assignments and the thesis process, offering invaluable life advice and genuine care. Also big thanks to Gonzalo Janer, who became a mentor during the early stages of my career, providing priceless professional guidance and inspiring new perspectives. I learned so much from his advice and appreciate his dedication to helping the community. Last but not least, my appreciation goes to the studios and clients who have generously offered opportunities for me to learn and grow.
