We had the good fortune of connecting with Muling Shi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Muling, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?

I pursued an artistic career because storytelling and creativity have always been at the core of who I am. From a young age, I was fascinated by motion—something as simple as the spinning of bicycle wheels sparked a lifelong passion for motion graphics and animation. The ability to bring stories to life through visuals and connect with audiences on an emotional level deeply inspires me.

I’ve always believed that art has the ability to enhance people’s lives, and I aspire to use my skills to evoke emotion, foster connection, and provide support through my work. This is why I chose to pursue a creative career—I’m driven by the desire to tell meaningful stories that leave a lasting impact.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion for motion graphics and animation began at a very young age. I’ll never forget the day I put my feet into the rear wheel of my mother’s bicycle, fascinated by the spinning patterns. Though the result was a month spent in slippers, that moment sparked a lifelong obsession with motion and storytelling that continues to drive my work today.

What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to blend motion graphics, animation, and interactive experiences to create emotionally resonant stories. I aim to do more than just entertain—I want my work to connect with people on a deeper level. One project that reflects this is my short film Happy Birthday, which I made during the pandemic to uplift those struggling with isolation. It taught me the power of animation in providing emotional support, and I’m proud of how it reached people in such a meaningful way.

Getting here hasn’t been easy. Financial pressures and other challenges along the way have tested my determination, but these obstacles only fueled my growth. I’ve learned the importance of persistence, trusting my vision, and staying true to my creative voice.

My story is about using motion design to connect with audiences and tell stories that resonate. Whether it’s through personal projects or larger works, my goal is to use animation as a tool to make a positive impact on people’s lives and inspire others with my unique voice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d make our first stop my favorite restaurant. It’s not just about having a good meal, but about creating a space where we can truly connect. There’s something intimate about sharing food—it reflects more than just tastes; it embodies culture, memories, and personal expression. The flavors, ingredients, and presentation all tell a story, much like the way people do.

Sitting down with a glass of wine, we’d not only savor the meal but also dive into deeper conversations that reflect who we are at our core. Food has a way of opening people up, breaking down walls, and making room for honesty. It’s in those moments over a shared dish that we could talk about everything—life, dreams, challenges, and memories. It’s as if each bite brings us closer, not just to the culture and art of the food, but to each other.

I’ve always believed that food offers a unique glimpse into someone’s world. Whether it’s a simple dish or an intricate one, the choices we make on the plate say so much about our roots, our preferences, and the way we experience life. By sharing my favorite place with my friend, I’m inviting them to experience my story, and in return, I’d get to hear more of theirs as we connect over a meal that goes beyond just sustenance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to several key people who have had a significant impact on my journey. First, Mike Patterson, my school thesis mentor, has provided invaluable guidance and support, helping me shape my creative voice. Steven Barker, my intern mentor, played a crucial role during my time at AppLovin, offering insights that helped me grow both professionally and personally. I also owe so much to my amazing friends, and most importantly, my incredibly supportive family, whose encouragement has been unwavering throughout my entire journey.
