We had the good fortune of connecting with Munenori Kishi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Munenori, what matters most to you?
Paying attention to detail. That’s the most important principle for me.
I have been involved in several orchestra projects as a copyist and orchestrator in not only LA but also Cleveland, San Diego, and Sydney. Also I’m now working as a composer for an upcoming video game.
Working with an orchestra means working with a real player and the recording session is always a battle against time. Therefore, preparing a detailed and player-friendly score is essential for an efficient recording.
Paying attention not only to the notes but also to the other factors such as direction, dynamics, and layout will contribute to a fast time recording.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Even though I graduated with a Jazz Composition degree, my interest was always open to the other music genre. What especially attracted me was orchestra music and electronic music. Actually, the combination of the two genres is a common technique among contemporary film composers so I tried to follow the techniques in my way. Luckily, my music with the technique got some film scoring awards not only in the US but also in Europe so the combination of several different music genres has been established as a fundamental of my music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being exposed to good arts benefits our arts too. LA has many great museums to visit so Getty, LACMA, and The Broad would be a place to hang out with my friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am thankful to Billy Childs, a Grammy winning composer. After moving to LA, I had a chance to work with him as a copyist. He had a ton of commissions so my score making skills were trained at that time. Plus, he composes complicated contemporary orchestra music, meaning paying attention to detail was the first priority.
