We had the good fortune of connecting with Musa Maurilus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Musa, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Queens, New York and stayed in both Queens + Long Island. I’m a Haitian, Dominican + French American, coming from a family of immigrants. Their determination to give my family and I a good upbringing and education set me up to be where I am today.

Being from New York has made me a very gritty, persistent, personable individual. I am very social, witty + wise. New York and the culture, has allowed me to be a seasoned communicator who can immerse in any space no matter the perspective, because in NY everybody has different backgrounds, cultures and attitudes that teach you how to blend but also stand out in social groups.

I’ve been through many different challenges in life, some in which I say, I’ve failed and fallen short, but each of them prepared me to become a creative and a pure lover of execution. I’d love to go deeper on this but I’m sure there will be a time I can express all the more!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ironically I actually can draw and paint, but that’s not the artist I am today.

I am a director and producer who has entered the production industry by reason of my mentor who has a church, and has propelled me to doing podcasts, services, concerts, political events, music videos + short films. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to over 10 states to do projects, and to 3 different countries for work!

What sets me apart? Well, to be honest, we as creatives are all on the same canvas, or if you want to say we’re all extensions of the original artist, just having a different piece of the art/creating a different piece of it. I believe what separates me, is purely the grace and tenacity I carry. I have a severe fear of underdelivering which, causes me to be obsessed with studying, creating and executing.

What brings me the most excitement and joy is the fact that I’m able to do a job, that I never would have thought I’d be doing, in a city foreign to mine. I’m grateful for the fact that I’m in the hardest city to make it, and I’m truly getting a stride in this space. So I’m excited for what’s to come + the fact that I’ve done so much in the 3 years I’ve entered this new career space. (Formerly in marketing + sports marketing).

Was the journey easy? How did I get here? Well, in full transparency, this journey, so far, was insane! By no means, was it easy, but what has enabled me to have confidence in this space, is the fact that I am born for it. Starting off with no production experience, not knowing a single thing or holding a single regard about cameras, compositions, timing, storylines, actually gave me a much cleaner and broader canvas to work with. Because I’ve learned so many different aspects of directing, producing and camera operating, in a unique, out of order sequence, I have a deeper grasp, horizon and love for this.

The most important thing I’ve learned today was NEVER give up, despite the cliche essence of it. There is no satisfaction in losing or quitting. You will make it in the space you decide to till the ground in.

I am a broadcast director (technical director) for television, podcasts, concerts, events and games. I also direct promos, commercials, short films, music videos and more. I have a deep passion for storylines, and execution, my favorite aspect of production is the detail orientation, skillset, and passion it requires. I am very studios, if you ask anybody around me, I’m always consuming content and learning different elements of this space, even though I don’t often have the space to learn up close from the major directors and producers of the film industry.

I aspire to be in the DGA and I’m also an SOC member currently.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question brings me a lot of joy. I’ve had the privilege to host lifelong best friends and family in my new city, and I always take them to the Grove, some steakhouses (I am Gatekeeping) and ramen spots! Because of my deep embedded love for New York, I sometimes Can neglect the beauty of this city, but it’s really because of the traffic lol. 5 lanes for what??? But, I’m a very simple man, I like to eat, and enjoy personal time with those I love, yeah boring right? But that’s just me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t just say a single individual, I have a community of people backing me and pushing me, with that being said, I’d love to shout out my family + friends (Mom, Dad, Jeda, The Benoits, Mehus, + many more). Not only them but my Elias + Revelation family. To my mentor who made this possible, Mr. Lovy Elias, thank you! And most importantly, shout out GOD!
