We had the good fortune of connecting with Muye Yu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Muye, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

My journey into becoming a film composer is underpinned by numerous motivations, with my profound love and passion for music leading the forefront. Starting piano lessons at the age of three, I’ve developed a deep connection to music and a desire to create original pieces that can evoke my emotions.

My imagination has been a crucial driver in my pursuit of creative work, providing a fertile ground for innovation. Film music allows me to contribute my imagination and understanding of music to the narrative of a film.

Collaborative creativity offers an ongoing learning experience that I find it incredibly rewarding. As a film composer, I have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from feature films and documentaries to television shows and video games. I really enjoy being part of a creative team and involve collaboration with directors, producers, musicians, dancers…, allows me to explore a plethora of genres and styles.

The impact on audiences holds a special place in my motivation spectrum. I’ve always believed that the realm of creative work chose me just as fervently as I pursued it. Witnessing the transformation of an initial idea into a complete piece feels like watching a child grow, which is immensely satisfying. At the same time, knowing that the work I participate in can move, inspire, or thrill viewers making every challenge worthwhile.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My composition inspiration draws from the oriental elements, and now they blend with the palette of sound, I think it’s important to be sensitive to the colors within music. In my composition, I strive to transcend boundaries and balance between visuals and music by using both orchestral and electronic music. I am also inspired by both oriental and western traditions to provide a fresh experience for the audiences.

I wouldn’t characterize my journey in composition as a smooth road, I view the challenges more as opportunities for growth. The beauty of artistic expression is that there are no strict rights or wrongs; music serves as a bridge and medium. My primary challenge has been creating music that genuinely moves the audience. This encompasses not only mastering compositional techniques but also understanding the synergy between music and visuals. Most importantly, the music needs to move me personally before it moves others.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes of course. The profound impact that mentorship, friendship, and academic pursuit have had on my life and career have enriched my personal growth. First and foremost, I owe a debt of gratitude to my family, their support and encouragement were pivotal during a time when I was making significant decisions about my future.

The institutions where I’ve studied and worked—Beijing Film Academy, USC, and UCLA—have been more than just places of learning. They have been communities where I’ve been nurtured and challenged, fostering my growth as both an artist and an individual.
