Meet Mylo MU | Music Producer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mylo MU and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mylo, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve been into music my whole life. My family sang in our Baptist church, and those live performances with instruments and soulful sounds always hit a special spot for me. My sister also was well-known as a singer. I used to draw and stuff, but it wasn’t until 5th-7th grade that Pharrell, College Dropout, and Madlib’s beats made me want to dive into making music.
Recognizing a depth within me that sought expression through music, I started honing my craft. Ever since, I’ve been on a journey of improvement and exploration within the realm of music. I see it as a potential career because I understand that mastering the tools and systems is crucial for success. The universal and inherently human quality of music makes it an easily accessible medium for connection.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This journey isn’t a walk in the park. It takes years of trial and error, coupled with some serious study time, just to hit that point of mastery. And mastery—requiring not just knowledge but a deep understanding that goes beyond the surface. Started with just vibing to beats, then graduated to breaking down the samples and drums that created those magic sounds. Studying song structures and songwriting has become integral, especially since I wear both the rapper and producer hats. Now, I’m knee-deep in exploring the nuances (theory) of these tracks.
My philosophy is all about breaking things down to build them back up. It’s the path to mastery, but let’s be real—it takes time. I’ve been part of different crews, from Backpackerz, Ill Children to BLK MGK, while also doing my own thing. T
he focus shifted to building my brand as a music producer/emcee over the last few years, striving to carve out a space in the culture and shape the next big thing. Living it, breathing it.The golden rule? Never throw in the towel. Quitting or hesitating means you haven’t found your purpose. Those who move with purpose do so with absolute determination because they can see a future that others might miss
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Starting with Hood Fantasy in DTLA at night, hosted by my dude Ashton McCreight. The next morning, we’re hitting Simply Wholesome for those smoothies. After that, catching a hike at Kenneth Hahn to soak in some vibes.
Now, switching to the nighttime – we’re at Sugarfish, and on another night, we’re hitting up Burgers and Beats in Leimert or Hawthorne. Also, gonna hit up TRU to see where he’s DJing, whether it’s Lock & Key or Apt 200.
Both days, we’re locking in studio time, cooking up beats, and hitting record stores for new sounds.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Literature plays a significant role in my evolution. Works like Siddartha and The Alchemist by Paola Coelo have left a lasting impact on me. I resonate with the journeys depicted and the pursuit of enlightenment. This approach extends to both my life and my music. I believe every experience contributes to one’s evolution, and it’s a personal choice to move to the next stage when life presents certain situations.
I want to give a shoutout to everyone who supported my music during my time in Berkeley, CA (2012-2017). It’s where I first made my mark as an adult. That DIY ethos carried me to where I am today, and it’s always been about the art.
I’m committed to maintaining that vibe in everything I do, along with a public responsibility to stand up for freedom, justice, and equality.
