We had the good fortune of connecting with Nafen Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nafen, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
When deciding whether to keep going or to give up, I typically consider the following aspects:
Passion and Motivation: I first ask myself if I still feel passionate and motivated about the project or direction. As a Director of Photography and Editor, I’ve always loved the process of creating visual stories. If that passion is still there, I tend to keep pushing forward because it’s the core driving force behind my work.
Potential and Value of the Project: I evaluate the potential and value of the project, not just economically but also in terms of personal growth and career development. For example, some of the commercial advertisements and documentaries I’ve worked on, despite the challenges, provided me with valuable experience and exposure.
Balance Between Challenges and Rewards: Every project has its challenges. I weigh whether the challenges outweigh the potential rewards. If the issues are technical or require more time to resolve, I usually choose to continue, as these challenges are opportunities for learning and growth.
Team Feedback and Support: As a collaborative professional, I highly value feedback and support from my team. Sometimes, their opinions and suggestions help me see the core of the problem more clearly, aiding in making an informed decision.
Long-Term Goals: Finally, I consider whether the decision aligns with my long-term career goals. I am dedicated to becoming an excellent visual storyteller, so I think about whether the project contributes to achieving this goal.
In summary, deciding whether to keep going or give up is never easy. It’s essential to maintain a clear mind, analyze the situation rationally, and also listen to your inner voice. For me, passion and love for visual storytelling often play a crucial role in the decision-making process.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist and creative professional, my work is deeply rooted in the art of visual storytelling. What sets me apart is my meticulous attention to detail, my ability to capture compelling narratives through the lens, and my proficiency in both cinematography and editing. I specialize in shot composition, lighting, and color correction, all of which play crucial roles in creating the desired atmosphere and emotion in a film.
One of the aspects I am most proud of is my versatility. Whether it’s working on commercial advertisements, short documentaries, or wedding shoots, I strive to bring a unique blend of technical skill and artistic vision to every project. This versatility has allowed me to work on a diverse range of projects, each with its own set of challenges and opportunities.
The journey to where I am today has not been easy. Like many in the creative industry, I’ve faced my share of challenges, including tight deadlines, technical difficulties, and the need to constantly innovate. However, these challenges have taught me invaluable lessons. I’ve learned the importance of adaptability, resilience, and effective communication. These skills have not only helped me overcome obstacles but have also enabled me to work seamlessly with directors and other team members to bring their visions to life.
One key lesson I’ve learned along the way is the value of continuous learning and self-improvement. The film industry is ever-evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging all the time. Staying updated and being willing to learn has been crucial in maintaining a competitive edge and delivering high-quality work.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I’m dedicated to crafting visually stunning and emotionally resonant stories. My goal is to leave a lasting impact through my work, whether it’s a touching documentary, a captivating commercial, or an artistic short film. My brand represents a commitment to quality, creativity, and a deep passion for the art of storytelling.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. Their unwavering support has been the cornerstone of my journey in the film industry. From the very beginning, they encouraged my passion for visual storytelling, even when it meant pursuing a less conventional career path. They provided not only emotional support but also the resources I needed to hone my skills and grow as a cinematographer and editor. Their belief in my abilities has been a constant source of motivation, and I owe much of my success to their love and encouragement. Their guidance and trust have shaped who I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
