We had the good fortune of connecting with Nailah Barcelona and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nailah, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in the Philippines and raised in Los Angeles, and this background has had a profound impact on shaping who I am today. As a first-generation Filipino-American immigrant, the experiences of my upbringing have instilled in me a strong work ethic and a drive to overcome challenges.

Growing up, I recognized the unique position of immigrants, like myself, who not only strive for their creative voice but also navigate the complexities of survival in America. In my journey, I didn’t often see many Filipinos pursuing careers in the creative industry. However, my passion for photography and graphic design emerged early on, fueled by my love for photography and Photoshop from a young age.

Being a part of the Filipino diaspora, I have always felt a responsibility to represent and uplift Filipino creatives. This commitment is reflected in my work, where I have collaborated with fellow Filipino creatives, supported small businesses such as Kaya Essentials, and showcased the talents of individuals like Jules Aurora. Additionally, I actively engage with local Filipino communities and organizations to contribute to the broader narrative of Filipino representation in the creative sphere.

In essence, my background has not only shaped my strong work ethic but has also ignited a sense of purpose in advocating for and amplifying the voices of Filipino creatives. It has become a driving force in my pursuit of a career in photography and graphic design, and I am dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the creative landscape while fostering a sense of community and representation for Filipino talent in America.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to where I am today professionally has not been easy. As a first-generation immigrant, there were hurdles in translating ideas into productions, often with limited resources. However, the challenges have been essential in shaping my resilience and determination. I’ve learned that where there’s a will, there’s indeed a way, and overcoming obstacles has only strengthened my passion for the creative process.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way include the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and building a strong support network.I am most proud of my dedication to bringing the visions of my clients and creative friends to life. Despite the challenges that come with limited resources, I believe in the power of creativity and resourcefulness. I approach each project with a commitment to find innovative solutions and make the most out of the available tools and opportunities.

My journey reflects the spirit of perseverance, cultural pride, and the belief that creativity knows no bounds. I am dedicated to making a positive impact through my work, contributing to the rich tapestry of voices in the creative industry, and inspiring others to pursue their passions, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Growing up in Los Angeles afforded me the privilege of being surrounded by a tapestry of cultures. To truly embrace the city’s rich diversity, I encourage exploring specific neighborhoods that encapsulate the essence of their communities. One such gem is Filipinotown, a cultural hub that reflects the vibrancy of the Filipino community.

A must-visit spot in Filipinotown is the new arch, a symbolic gateway that beautifully encapsulates the cultural heritage of the Filipino people. To delve deeper into the heart of Filipino culinary traditions, head to Dollar Hits. This local spot promises an authentic Filipino street food experience, allowing you to savor the flavors and authenticity of Filipino cuisine.

For a more immersive cultural encounter, consider attending Filled Market, a monthly event that brings together Filipino artisan vendors. Here, you can not only purchase unique handmade crafts but also indulge in the delightful array of Filipino food offerings. It’s an opportunity to engage with the community, appreciate Filipino artistry, and relish the camaraderie that makes these cultural experiences in Los Angeles truly special.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
