We had the good fortune of connecting with Nandan Lawande and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nandan, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Films are not just made for entertainment purposes but also to spread awareness. I believe that a film could take somebody out of their reality to believe in something more. It has the power to communicate a stronger message. As a cinematographer, I love to work with directors and writers whose stories give a strong voice to unheard issues. Similarly, the last few films I worked on “Fear of Darkness” which is based on Agoraphobia caused by killing of George Floyd and “Retrieval” which is a film that brings awareness to motor neuron disease and shows the importance of donation of organs. Another such film is “bare” a drama based on breast cancer. This film for screened in the awareness film fest. These films have won over 20 film festivals including retrieval being the BAFTA finalist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that work should be a space that you look forward to go to, everyday. I make sure to set a very positive environment, that encourages everybody to do their best. I believe in teamwork and I also believe that everyday is a new learning. I always look forward to the upcoming technology and tools, that help us get more creative with our craft. Im grateful for every experience which has always given me a new outlook and dimension to work. These experiences have also made me believe that, passion, hard work, dedication and teamwork are 4 major factors that will help you reach your goals.
No project is the easiest journey. There will be different challenges and hurdles that you need to conquer. Holding your ground through all of these challenges is the real achievement.

I strongly believe that a film holds the power to greatly influence a man out of his/her own reality. I hope to create memorable experience with my films that leave the audience with a thought as they leave the theaters.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is a city that has a lot to offer. This place has given me friends from all around the world, which have helped me grow as an individual. I would love to show the historic studios around LA, the Hollywood sign, walk of fame, and my favorite, the Griffith Observatory. Another favorite place to eat is the best ramen in town – Tatsu ramen in Melrose. I would love to show the places where most of the Hollywood films are shot. Its quite a thrill!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would thank the veteran cinematographers, that inspire me. I would also like to give a shoutout to my fellow cast and crew for always making the film happen.
