Meet Naoshi

We had the good fortune of connecting with Naoshi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Naoshi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started working in Tokyo as an office worker, I was in search of something I could immerse myself in. One day at a bookstore, I came across a book featuring a collection of works by Kin Shiotani (https://kinshio.com), an illustrator and writer. The unique, freehand style of this travel-loving artist left a deep impression on me. I later got to meet him, and he ended up becoming my mentor. Crossing paths with him opened the door for me to immerse myself in the world of art, and thus my life as an artist began in 2004.
While searching for a medium that suited my personality and style, I found a sand art kit, which was something I used to play with as a child. It was so nostalgic! I became obsessed with sand art and kept experimenting with it, and before I knew it 20 years flew by!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I use sand to create my artwork. It’s smooth to the touch, and the colorful, shiny grains bring me comfort and energy. The fact that the art is created with this medium makes my work unique.
For a decade, I balanced office duties in Japan with my creative pursuits. Yet, the most difficult period unfolded during a six-week hospital stay following an injury. This setback actually marked a turning point as it ignited me to take on the challenge of becoming an artist. In 2014, I relocated to Los Angeles with the intention of living a life free from regrets. Despite the initial challenges of adapting to a foreign city, I persisted. Over time, I grew accustomed to the unfamiliarity, and my days shifted from dwelling on limitations to celebrating accomplishments. Through this process, I came to understand the importance of being my own best friend and biggest supporter.
In 2023, I published my picture book “TAKO KNOWS,”(https://overcupbooks.com/products/tako-knows-by-naoshi) participated in an art fair in Taiwan, had an exhibition and workshop in Thailand, and enjoyed traveling with my work. Traveling always brings unexpected adventures, which sparks excitement in me! I want to continue exploring different destinations along with my artwork.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it’s their first time visiting Los Angeles, I would take them to the main tourist attractions like the beach and Hollywood first, then go to the stores and galleries that I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
・WACKO / SOAP PLANT / La Luz de Jesus Gallery
(https://www.wackola.com/, https://laluzdejesus.com/)
・Popkiller (https://www.popkiller.us)
・Leanna Lin’s Wonderland (https://leannalinswonderland.com)
・Pygmy Hippo Shoppe (https://pygmyhipposhoppe.com)
・Fold Gallery (The Last Bookstore
) (https://www.foldgoods.com/ , (https://www.lastbookstorela.com/)
If we have more time I’d like to take them on a road trip to Salvation Mountain, San Diego, Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara, and beyond! We would cruise through expansive landscapes while belting out our favorite songs at the top of our lungs! (I’m actually planning to meet up with my best friend from Japan in June in NYC to enjoy New York City and Niagara Falls. Can’t wait!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First is the aforementioned Mr. Kin Shiotani, who ignited my passion for drawing. I still visit him when I’m able, and continue to learn under his guidance.
I’m also grateful to my jr. college teacher, who offered invaluable support when I was struggling to find a job. It was through his introduction to a job opportunity in Tokyo that ultimately led me to discover my passion.
In addition, it felt like fate when I met a Japanese landlord who gave me the opportunity to move to Los Angeles when I first visited the city in 2010 for the Sanrio 50th anniversary exhibition. I took up residence on her property for 2 years from 2014, and her encouragement and guidance helped me navigate that initial period filled with uncertainties.
There are too many people I’m grateful for, and want to give everyone and everything a shoutout! From my family who continues to support me, comedians who bring a smile to my face, and music that inspires me, to the travels that give me relief from stress and cat videos lol.
I’ve experienced first hand that a shift in your surroundings can lead to drastic changes in your life, which is why I’m truly grateful to every single person I’ve crossed paths with.
