We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Deciding to work in this industry was the acceptance that I would be constantly faced with failure, and would constantly be faced with a choice to give up. Accepting this career meant accepting that I would never give up, even when faced with more failures than successes. When you push past those moments of doubt, you will find the other side of that to be very rewarding.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I often got bored doing the same thing growing up, and that has continued into my career path. I wear a lot of different hats when it comes to the film industry. I work anything from an editor to an sfx artist, to being an assistant director or a scripty. I like to be on set, but sometimes I love working from home or anywhere in the world, and that’s why I enjoy what I do so much. It offers me not only creative freedom, but personal freedom.

Getting to where I am today was, and continues to be a struggle. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that just because you made it once doesn’t mean you won’t be back to square one next month, and that’s something most people who don’t work in this industry don’t know. You can be working on a great hollywood blockbuster for a year, and then be out of work the next, and you have to be disciplined enough to find the work, keep connected with your network, and continue to improve your skills.

Patience, kindness, and self love are the perfect recipe to being successful in this industry. You have to be kind to others, but more importantly to yourself. It’s HARD out here, and there’s always mistakes to be made, and someone who can do your job better than you. It’s up to you to be strong, remind yourself that you are good enough, and take every opportunity that’s given to you, no matter what!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 5 years now, and some of my favorite places to visit would be The Huntington Library, Silver lake Flea Markets on the weekends, and on sunny days head to Malibu for Point Dume beach for the best views and best chances to see whales and other sea life.

Places to eat would be Ted and Connie’s for their amazing happy hour Oysters, Hugo’s Resturaunt for amazing brunch, and Tomato Pie for the best pizza in town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my father, who has always believed in me, supported me, and cheered me on through even the hardest of times.
