We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Adamsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nate, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly I often times feel like it’s the only thing I know how to do in life. When it comes to mundane “normal” societal things I feel like I’m doing something tedious or hard, but when I’m performing, I feel the most at home. A commonly asked question geared towards people who are in the arts is “What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist?” To that I would ask “What would you do if you stopped breathing?” I think about being an artist the same way I think about breathing…. I don’t really think about breathing, it’s just a natural part of my being that happens naturally. Perhaps I didn’t decide to be an artist but like breathing it is my source of life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was placed on stage at a very young age. I grew up acting and singing in musicals and plays, then in film as I got older. When I was in my early twenties I accidentally became a stand up comedian and now 6 years later I’ve sort of made a career out of it, but my most recent passion in my artistic endeavors has been my band The Boland Underground. I have been making music for a long time. Growing up we had a grand piano in the house that I would diddle on and write silly tunes with, as I got older into high school I met one of my best friends and artistic partner Nathaniel Sylvester, who plays piano like no one else on this planet. In high school being theater kids we would sort of write funny musicals that were mostly improv songs that I’d make up while Nathaniel played, and honestly they weren’t half bad, but we will get back to that in a second. I felt like I was always around music but I never considered myself that much of a musician until I learned some guitar and started writing songs for myself. One of the most uncanny things can be the catalyst for taking on something new. After high school I had worked at The Boys and Girls Club of America where I met someone who would change my life forever, Ro. Ro was a multi instrumental genius on his way to Berkeley school of music and also my co worker/ friend. Ro was always writing something new and was always inspiring me with how he played. I play a guitar “upside down” I am left handed but play a right handed guitar “upside down.” But that never stopped him from patiently trying to teach me in my own weird way of playing. Ro was also inspired by my singing and was always pushing for me to sing and write more songs, but I was never too in love with the idea. I felt insecure, but as I said before it’s uncanny how certain things can end up being a catalyst for something new. Unfortunately Ro’s time here got cut short when he passed away in a fatal car accident. Losing someone who inspired you to be a better artist really pushes you to be an even better artist. I started to write songs seriously to a point where I was actually performing them live at shows. I never would have thought that it would happen like that, but the world is funny. I ended up becoming a comedian playing across the country at clubs like The Comedy Store, and The Broadway Comedy Club, sort of playing music here and there at shows sometimes until two years ago when Nathaniel the crazy piano player who I had mentioned earlier, moved back to LA from NYC. We had both just gone through some hardship and were looking to invest our time into something new and interesting. We had made a bunch of funny songs in high school, but we decided it was time to create something real and exciting. Most of the music I wrote before this point was punk folk influenced, but with Nathaniel’s talents in producing and playing, our music was going to take on a totally new form. The Boland Underground was born. We’re a psychedelic, experimental new wave, post punk, grunge band making bops that sound new yet familiar. The Boland Underground is a place that exists amongst our universe that is happening all at once at the same time. The underbelly of society, a mocking mirror of mankind. We are just carriers and antennas transmitting the data from the eye that is Boland to the rest of the universe. Give us a listen on Spotify and all other platforms to see for yourself. Ya never know where music might take you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love playing a tour guide in LA so I would say if you’re visiting LA and I had to show ya around we would firstly go to In n Out obviously, then I’d take you to Griffith park where we would look at all of LA from the observatory, followed by a night out at one of the many famous venues in LA perhaps The Comedy Store, or The Whisky a Go-Go, or a cool dance club like Davey Wayne’s.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To all the people I have ever collaborated with in the past til present I’d like to thank all of you. I am lucky to have worked with some amazing talents. Being surrounded by a collective of like minded artists throughout the years is super rewarding and inspiring. I hope to inspire the people I work and surround myself with as an artist too.
