We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nate, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
My goals are ever expanding and where it once was a goal to be one of the biggest names in the music industry, it is now a goal to be valuable and effective in the music industry. I want my music, knowledge and impact to reach generations for long after I’m gone. I desire to have experienced all of my desires from touring on a large scale to producing music that is real to me and good for human consumption. As long as I live and am blessed to do so, I will do so!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nate Hicks Music is an expanding brand that others can relate to, though it is personal to me because it is me. J. Cole said there’s no such thing as a life that’s better than yours and I embody that in my music. Though I may talk about hardships and things that come across as maybe a bit sad, there’s nothing better than being able to speak my truth through my art. That is what sets me apart from others who also make music.
I’ve accomplished a lot, gone a lot of places, endured a lot of aches and pains and more, and I’m proud of it all, but super excited for what is to come. My passion, drive, resilience, ambition, and connection to the Holy Spirit have brought me to where I currently am, professionally, and will take me where I need to be.
I could write a book on all of the challenges that I’ve overcome and the lessons that I’ve learned along the way. As a matter of fact… I will! In the meantime, I’ll just say that I’m grateful for those who I am connected to and who are connected to me. As I elevate, we all go together. All love, Always.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Next time my best friend comes to Toledo for a week long trip, we will eat Duwey Wings, Duce’s Wings N Things, Toleato Truck (wings), Bibibop, Monroe St. Diner, Grape Leaf Diner, This is It, SoulSisters Kitchen, and of course, my own kitchen! After spending all that money on food, most of our hangs will likely need to revolve around the *FREE* Metroparks in Toledo and surrounding areas. To unbig our backs, we’ll also hit the Grynd House Gym and skating on Wednesday night.
To get our fix of live music, I’d likely be having an event while she’s in town! If not, hopefully the Soulful Collective Band or one of our other comrades is playing somewhere.
Toledo has plenty to offer, so we’d check online to find anything else that may pique our curiosity and move accordingly.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are plenty of people who could claim credit for some of my successes along the way and I pray that they all have felt recognized and appreciated by me for their places in my heart and my journey. My family and upbringing will always hold a lot of the credit, though today’s shoutout has to go to the fans and supporters that I’ve gained over the years. Some have been around since the very beginning and have introduced my music to others. When I release, I have people willing to speak their honest truth about how my music makes them feel. When I curate shows, I am blessed by those who show up continuously in various ways, from attending and sharing with others to buying tickets even if they can’t attend. When I started selling merchandise, my supporters have gone out of their way to place multiple orders. When I go through life and may not feel so motivated on the music side of things, my supporters offer love and words of encouragement while likely having no clue that I’m even going through anything. I love and appreciate each individual who reciprocates that energy, truly.
