We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathalie Tierce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathalie, how does your business help the community or world?
My work as an artist and designer is twofold. The work I do as a visual storyteller/artist is about making a scary world beautiful by creating visual allegories. The work I do as a color consultant is about making someone’s home (their personal world) more gratifying. In both these ways, I hope to empower people with a sense of joy about life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At this point in my life, I have earned a living in many iterations of the word “artist”. I’ve been a scenic artist in theme parks, theatre, film, television, and rock concerts, a muralist and faux finisher, portrait painter, illustrator, and designer. Now I maintain an art studio practice and while color consulting for residential interiors and exteriors. Having been lucky enough to have worked with some of the best artists and designers in the world, I’ve been able to learn about conveying a visual story effectively. However, getting there wasn’t easy. As a woman, in Europe in the ’90s, film production was very much a male-dominated atmosphere. I think was has kept me going has been realizing when my career as an artist needed to metamorphosize. At times, the transformations have come for different reasons: a life event (like having a child), a need to challenge me in a new way. When you are reinventing yourself, change is always scary. The fear of “can I do this?” “Will this work out?” Should I try this at all?” is real. Resilience, however, is like a muscle that needs strengthening. The more you dare (and sometimes fail and get back up again), the tougher you become. One of my recent proudest accomplishments is publishing a book of my paintings and writings called “Fairy Tale Remnants.” Besides the work being very personal, I’ve bought together everything I’ve learned about conveying a mood through images using color, form, and expression.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were up for doing hikes, I love going to places like Eaton Canyon Falls. It’s a hidden gem. Other wonderful walks would be Runyon Canyon Park and Griffith Park Trails, and for sure, make our way up to The Observatory. Raffi’s Place in Glendale for dinner or lunch. Hands down, the best, freshest Mediterranean and middle eastern food around. For art, I’d take them to a few museums, LACMA, The Broad, or if we wanted to stay closer to Glendale, the Norton Simon in Pasadena. Definitely go to the Bergamot Station Santa Monica and visit the galleries there. After a walk on the beach, we could go to dinner and drinks at Shutters on the beach—such a lovely place to watch the sunset.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am so grateful for my family and friends that have been a constant source of encouragement when I lose the plot, honesty when I need a reality check, insight when I can’t see what might be right in front of me, and a good laugh to revive my spirits. Although I have been fortunate to have learned from many great, talented wise mentors, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without the support of my husband, Chris Towle, an amazing sculptor, and human being.
