We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Vonk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We work tirelessly to build our customer base into a community of friends and supporters. We get to know them, and this allows us to help them find art they will love.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sullivan Goss Gallery is one of the largest galleries between LA and San Francisco. It has been around. since 1984, and has established a reputation as a place with art for new collectors, serious collectors, and everyone in between. But what really sets us apart in the art world is that we actively avoid being pretentious or snobby in any way. We build our audience by making sure everyone feels welcome here, and we encourage all of our visitors to ask questions, and to learn more about what is on the wall, and what we specialize in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and would tour though the Funk Zone. We’d eat at Bibiji, and Corozon Comedor. We’d walk down State Street, which has recently transformed into a vibrant pedestrian promenade.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was extraordinarily lucky to be be mentored by Frank Goss, one of the founders of Sullivan Goss Gallery. He was an extraordinary teacher and helped me find my own voice as a curator and my confidence as a dealer. And he taught me to genuinely care about our community of visitors and patrons.
