Meet Navid Hejazi | Film music composer, video game music composer & violinist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Navid Hejazi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Navid, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was younger I realized I needed to develop my creativity because I was feeling a strong energy and I needed to shape into something. I found a lot of motivation and inspiration on film music so I followed that call. During the process of creating, I enjoy learning new skills and exploring ideas, always wondering where they will take me. For me, it was also very important to give back beauty, excitement and inspiration to the world, something I have received from movies I love since I was a kid.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a film composer. I create original music for films, documentaries, TV, video games, commercials, trailers, podcasts, etc. I was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. I come from a family with a strong music tradition and I started playing the violin at the age of 5. I had great teachers and a solid training. Since childhood I was taught to be persisting and disciplined, which helped me achieving my goals. When I was 15 I realized I wanted to become a film composer, because film music was my passion and I loved movies very much. I had to fight hard and sacrifice other things I enjoyed doing in life in favor of music. I think these sacrifices pushed me to try harder to get what I wanted. I later on had the chance to go to top colleges both in Spain and the US to get a good education, always with the goal in mind of moving after to LA to pursue this career, because I only liked American movies and my favorite composers and studios were here. All the effort I made got me to work on what I love.
This industry is highly competitive and for years, work demanded for me being my only focus in life. This created an imbalance in my physical health but with time, I learned to keep good habits like doing exercise, meditating, reading, eating healthy, teaching and participating in community service activities. Working hard is necessary, but it is also important to remember other aspects in life that will bring you balance.
I have focused on achieving success by working hard, being disciplined, open-minded and above all these, loving what I do. I have worked on many films, having the chance to get a lot of experience and learning about how the industry works. When you are a film composer you are part of the filmmaking process. The more you understand about filmmaking, the better you become. I have always had in mind the idea that every story has its own soul, so I try to bring to each film its own unique music identity, always trying to reach for excellence. I have also collaborated many times with other composers, having a chance to expand my knowledge and get creative.
I am co-founder at Game Music Town, a company focused on creating audio for video games and apps. We wanted to bring together a reliable team of professionals, offering a wide range of services and doing what we love while working in a healthy and positive environment. We want the developer to have access to all of our different services to fulfill their audio needs. Its success is based on offering a wide range of services, taking care of music, sound design and voice over, which has opened for us more opportunities. We have a team of industry’s top professionals, both in the US and Europe, made of music composers, sound designers, engineers and voice over actors.
The end goal has always been to work with talented film makers and to inspire the audience. Unfortunately, to me today’s movies don’t have the magic and innocence they used to have. I like when a movie entertains and inspires at the same time, but I feel today’s movies have a dark and pessimistic energy or are too superficial. Growing up I used to get inspired by many movies and exciting stories, but it is being really hard for me these days to find inspiration. I think the content has to be refreshed and the tone elevated, to become more optimistic and dignified.
I was raised with a strong moral education focused on living a spiritual conscious life. I highly value integrity and always have kept in mind not to let the noise of the world confuse or distract me. Things like status, fame and love for money are just a mirage. Don’t follow them. You could choose doing anything in this life, just do it being a good person and doing good to the world. I believe that’s a life worth living.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s just so much to do and so many places to visit! I would take them to Malibu, Palisades, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach…I just love the ocean and nature…going for a walk, surfing, hiking…eating good Mexican, Thai, Persian and vegetarian food. I would take them to Universal Studios and driving around West Hollywood, Sunset, Hollywood…I am sure they would have so much fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For their support, mentorship, encouragement and friendship along these years, I would like to dedicate it to composers Nima Fakhrara and Ramin Kousha, mixer and engineer Adam Schmidt, composer and colleague Marcos Moscat and my agent at Bibelot Producciones.
