We had the good fortune of connecting with Neesha Colvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Neesha, what do you attribute your success to?
I generated my business wanting to be apart of the change versus the problem of discriminatory practices within the industry/city, in order to do that it required consistency and accountability which in turn segwayed into being authentic, having humility, and empathy in order to build my brand. I am not only a hair salon but utilize my store front to give back to the local artists by spearheading an event called the Alliance , Resilience and Truth (A.R.T) Walk with my business partner J. Lynn. It’s a platform for all local artist to come together to network and support each other’s crafts along with sharing their ART with the community. The ART walk is a place for all creative souls.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I love locs, braids and just the art hair and how there’s truly no limits to how creative you can be. This question has got me thinking where I was just a few short year ago, when I was part of an industry that was completely imploded–and that was after putting in countless hours consistently to accomplish my goals as a professional young black entrepreneur.

Regarding your question on lessons learned, no matter how much we learn from the books there is a significant difference between practical and theoretical experience. A successful failure is a failure that we respond to correctly: by finding the good, taking responsibility, moving on, and taking action in a positive direction. Furthermore, there are many life lessons that we simply cannot learn until we face certain situations in our life. Most people would say that there are some lessons that came too late, catching us off-guard and unprepared. A few lessons that stand out is never compromise your personal morals, don’t mix family and business,  good things don’t come easy, never fail to try more, take care of your health early, make every moment count, live and let live, be flexible with your goals. For every action, there’s an equal opposite reaction, don’t give up. Lastly not least thank God and be humble. My brand is an organic hair and skin brand it truly does what we say it does. At Simplicity we take an educated artistic and personal approach to your individual style and well-being. We are committed to Beauty and Wellness and that includes our products, inclusiveness of all hair types our services and our way of doing business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When friends and family come to visit I like to show them a good time. If you know me you know I love food and music. You can expect to visit some of the top eateries in the area , along with painting and one of my favorite places is the beach ⛱ from Jet Sking to relaxing in the sand. The beach is a great atmosphere and a for sure a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I’d like to shoutout my family to include my husband. I’m grateful for his love, and I feel like the luckiest woman in the world to have a man and who believes in me like he does. None of this would have been possible without his support.

During this 10.5 year process I’ve had many mentors and self-help certification trainings yearly I sought to help me ensure every decision made building the brand was the best decision along with prayer 👏🏾 for the trials and tribulations of starting and sustaining my business during COVID-19. I view them as a tests of one’s patience or endurance. These hurdles have definitely molded me into the women I am today.
