We had the good fortune of connecting with Nengi Wabote and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nengi, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I have several goals I’d like to be able to achieve by the end of my career, but I think the two that are at the top of my list are to be a Production Designer on large-scale films and television shows, and to be a Professor for production design as well. I have multiple interests in the field of design, so naturally, being able to start out in roles such as being a set designer and an art director will all be a part of my journey to achieving my goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe my background is my greatest asset. I moved around a lot growing up, both to different cities in the same country, as well as different countries altogether, four in total. It contributed to my sense of discovery and joy in learning new things about people and places, which in turn, influences the way I think about my projects. I started out in the architectural field and I’m currently transitioning into scenic/production design for theater, film, and television. I think all forms of design are difficult, but I’ve been enjoying my journey so far. I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t take the good people in your life for granted. They aren’t easy to come by.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sadly I haven’t explored LA as much as I would like to, but my favourite spot in the whole city is Griffith Observatory. I love science and space and it’s always a magical time. The views from up there are also spectacular. My close second would be Koreatown. Great food, great vibes, it’s always a good time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Id like to give a shoutout to my parents, Simbi and Sotonye Wabote. They’ve never questioned my decisions and always have complete faith in which paths I choose to take, and fully support me. They’re my biggest fans. I’d also like to give a shoutout to my two younger sisters, for being the coolest girls I know. I always look up to them even though I’m older, for their courage, strength and drive in everything they do.
