We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Frangione and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I looked at my life and a daily dedication and responsibility to something, I couldn’t imagine anything other than the arts. It’s the way I communicate. It’s the way I know how to contribute something to the people I love and to the world. Art connects us, inspires us, and transforms us. It allows us to see ourselves in others. To me, a career in the arts is a high-stakes profession because artists can impact so many lives and help move society forward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a filmmaker. My most recent work, BUCK RUN, is available now on Cable, and Satelite On-Demand, DIRECTV, Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and YouTube Movies. I’m proud of BUCK RUN’s look at masculinity. So often, films about young boys becoming men focus on a violent right of passage. In BUCK RUN, our lead character becomes a man through acceptance. I want my work to offer audiences a new path forward, a new way of understanding one another.

I got to where I am today through consistent effort and guidance from incredible mentors and colleagues. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but that’s the fun of the journey. My greatest enemy has often been myself, my fears, doubts, and resentments. I find making films to be my opportunity to look at myself newly and overcome those challenges. If I can see a new way forward for myself, audiences can see one too. I’ve learned to look ahead. As artists, we can become attached to one single project. We can go mad making it. I think part of creating is madness, but I’ve also learned to keep thinking ahead. To ask: what do I want to say next? And why do I want to say it? And what impact will saying it make?

I’d love the world to know about the new company I’m incredibly proud to be a partner in, Autotelic Pictures. We’re an artist-first company committed to pushing culture forward by empowering interdisciplinary artists from marginalized perspectives to create work that is brave, inventive, and embraces our collective capacity for change. You will be hearing more about us and what we’re doing quite soon!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the Hollywood Hills. They’re iconic, but I also find them beautiful and exciting. Driving around a bend and getting a full glimpse of sprawling LA is a great kick-off. Some restaurants I love are Pinches Tacos and Greenblatt’s Deli on Sunset Blvd. Of course, you can’t pass up a trip to The Griddle. I love Shabu Shabu, and my favorite spot is Sapporo in Glendale. Ending a night at The Laugh Factory.

I love walking around Silver Lake and getting a coffee. And for me, the rest is checking out a great screening at an indie movie theater — The Nuart, Laemmle, The New Beverly. When COVID isn’t a factor, you can’t go wrong watching a movie in a theater in LA, and the indie theaters are great for Q&A’s with actors and directors.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fiance and producing partner Nancy Degnan deserves a very loud shoutout. Nancy and I have been dreaming together since the moment we met. She’s an absolute genius, a renaissance woman. To be in love with my creative partner and my best friend is a gift I am incredibly thankful for and often humbled by.
