We had the good fortune of connecting with Nik West and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nik, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Learning how the nuts and bolts work to having a successful career in the arts has to be the most important component of my success. I didn’t have a label, a manager, or someone helping me “get famous”. I didn’t get to open for an artist or band. I had to figure out how to make everything work on my own. I had to research. Learn how to create graphics and create a brand that stood out. My success is so much more than my artistry. It’s mainly about being a business person. When I figured this out, that’s when bigger artists like Prince started to take notice and mentor me which helped my knowledge grow even more. I had what I needed to succeed and reach the goals I had set for myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self taught musician, most known for my vocals and bass playing. I think what sets me apart is my crazy onstage antics and my hyper visuals. People tend to love the way I slap the bass while doing multiple things at once (singing, dancing, backbends, splits, etc). I am most proud of the way I have inspired others to pick up and instrument for the very first time. I have a super successful bass course (bassdominationcourse.com) that always sells out during enrollment. It is one thing to entertain people but it’s a huge win when people get inspired enough to want to try something new and learn from me directly. It’s never been easy trying to be successful but I’ve never doubted that I could do anything I worked extremely hard for. I try and stay positive and set small goals every day and doing that helps me achieve the bigger, long term goals. I’ve learned to keep a positive mind set, never to compete and compare myself to others because we all have a different path, and to lift up others along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course there all of the touristy things to do like Universal Studios, Six Flags, Santa Monica Pier, and Hollywood Blvd.

But I love driving through the Palasades. It’s really fun just driving through the neighborhoods and there you’ll find some of the most beautiful views of the coast and the city.

We would definitely visit Smize Cream which is a DELICIOUS… out of the box ice cream spot created by supermodel Tyra Banks. My favorite food spots are Senoritas Prime Taco. (My husband loves the Carne and Shrimp burrito and my fav is the El Pastor burrito.) Another AMAZING Mexican spot is SALSA AND BEER …almost everything on the menu is yum! (I’m from Arizona and I’m picky with Mexican food so trust me!!!) Fav sushi and saki spot is Tokyo Cube. It’s super cute especially at night and everything is top notch and laid back . If you want a good Salad, Chop Shop in North Hollywood. For breakfast, we will hit up EAT or Cici’s -OMG PANCAKES!! (which is always packed).

We will hang out on the beach in Malibu to chill in peace or head to Huntington Beach to see real surfers ride the waves.

Way too much to do in LA but that’s a just a few of my fav things to do.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my artistic director Demann Crawford. He helps me with the visuals which is a HUGE part of my brand. He also does interior design for some of the biggest name in Hollywood.
