We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Whitley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikki, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Looking back in hindsight, I see that I had always been an entrepreneurial at heart. I can remember in elementary school selling paper chatter boxes for .50 cents. It was an easy item to make and was amazed that kids purchased it. I noticed to them, they weren’t just purchasing paper, but something that would entertain and make them happy in that moment. I was servicing their needs/wants at the time. Since I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that it’s about serving others, and not so much yourself. When you serve others, you will in turn reap the rewards. It was in 2014 when my husband and a good friend of mine introduced me to Medical Coding. I was so interested that I enrolled in a course and began my studies. After a few months, I became certified. It wasn’t hard to tap into the market because my friend was working various contracts and I kept my eyes on here and how successful she was that I didn’t give myself time to worry about not being able to tap into the market. I began coding and started working various contracts and really enjoyed it. I said to myself, “if the companies I’m working for are getting contracts, I wonder if I can start getting my own”?. That question put me on a path to pursue my own contracts and service clients directly. There are so many physician offices, hospitals, etc that need this service and thus, I knew that I would enjoy having a company to service their needs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Genesis Elite Medical Service LLC serves physicians offices, hospitals and medical facilities in medical coding, billing, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Auditing, Risk Adjustment, and consulting. I’m excited that my company is truly about serving others. There was a time, not too long ago, when I heard the Lord say, “your success is not going to come from a job, but serving others”. If I look at it as a job, I’ve missed the mark. It’s about serving others, helping them to solve problems and find solutions when it comes to billing and coding. I can remember starting off as a medical coder making $11 an hour and not knowing that my company would grow into what it it today. I obtained experience in medical coding, then auditing, then management, Clinical Documentation Improvement, and then Consulting. I can honestly say, it wasn’t so hard because I kept believing that I could do anything and kept praying and God just kept increasing us. There were a few challenges. In medical coding, there are many many fields of study. There’s outpatient and inpatient. All of my studies and certifications were for outpatient. When I decided to cross over to inpatient, it required a whole new skillset. I struggled a little at the beginning but always believed that I could learn anything and so the more I practiced, the better I got. I believe that if you first believe in God and yourself, you can do anything. I learned that the things we want in life, speak them, don’t complain or speak the opposite, and you will have them. The first part of my company’s name is Genesis. Which is the first book in the bible. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Those first four words, “In the beginning, God”. I wanted God to be at the forefront of my business and so hence, the name Genesis Elite Medical Service, a medical coding and billing company here to serve!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting me, we would go to several nice spots in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. we would visit the following places. The Georgia Aquarium, The World of Coca Cola, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, The High Museum and the Fox Theater. We would dine at The Cenacle in Austell Ga, Lazy Betty, Polaris, Cheesecake Factory, Ricardo’s in Madison…just to name a few.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my Shoutout to first and foremost, my Heavenly Father, who created me for such a time as this and gifted me with the knowledge, skill, abilities, and faith to pursue all the dreams He’s put inside of me. Without Him, none of this could even be possible. Secondly, I would like to give a Shoutout to my husband, Darrell, for his love, support and relentlessness in pulling the greatness out of me. He continues to enrich me everyday. I would like to give a Shoutout to my children, Isaac, Samantha, Gabrielle, and Ariel, who love me no matter what and are always encouraging me and believing I can do anything!.I want to give a Shoutout to my mom Sandra and Dad, Charles, for always without fail, believing in me and making me the woman of faith I am today. I would like to give a Shoutout to my Pastors, Dr. Jeff and Okyon O”neal for always speaking God’s words over my family and our business. They have seen us in the highs and lows and have never waivered one bit from the greatness they see that God has instilled in us. I want to give a Shoutout to Stella Payton for speaking into my life, loving me, and always encouraging and believing in me. I want to give a Shoutout to Prophet Mimi Gladden, for prophesying God’s truths over me and my family and our businesses and revealing God’s plans and destiny for our lives. I want to give a Shoutout to Kay Miller who has expounded and mentored me about the Kingdom of God!
