Meet Nils Davey | Creative Director and Fabricator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nils Davey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nils, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
During my time working at agencies both experiential and advertising i’ve always had an interest and longing to physically make things. After a long time freelancing creating ad campaigns, key art, pitches and treatments I ended up working at an experiential agency as creative director. I loved the industry for its constant challenges and unique cross over between creative concept and real-life execution but was always jealous of the fabrication teams we’d bring in to physically build the concepts i’d designed. With my interest piqued I began to consider how a new sort of agency could be born from the combination of award wining creative direction and the practical knowledge of builders and makers. After learning all I could from the fabrication teams we employed I decided to team up with my business partners to create PBZ which develops creative experiential designs and then implements them through fabrication, prop making, graphics on site.
It offers our clients a unique opportunity for maximum control of a project as we develop the creative with budget and practicality in mind and then go on to execute it exactly as we have pitched it.
It’s also a great work out and gets me away from the computer in the studio.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have a unique niche that bridges the gap between creative and fabrication within the experiential industry. I also think that we’re a pretty easy going, problem solving small team so our clients get direct interaction with the team with very fast turn around.
It’s been an interesting journey so far and it often feels like we’ve found our clients through sheer luck but in reality our work and services speak for themselves. We’ve been blessed to have found a number of clients who keep coming back to us… always a good sign!
We’ve had some challenges with work flow, scaling and logistics over the years but have overcome each problem practically and logically to create a solid foundation for our business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As i’ve grown older and become more familiar with Los Angeles my recommendations have definitely changed. When friends visit from England i’ll often take them out locally in Highland Park to some award winning restaurants, typically we’ll hit the gun club down town as most English people haven’t had the opportunity to shoot a gun before so it’s a unique one-time experience. I’ll also take them out of the city to some of the local nature spots. Most people don’t really take advantage of Los Angeles’ location to the mountains so i’ll often go up Angeles Crest or take a day trip out to the desert. My favorite spot on a day trip right now is visiting La Copine in Landers then off-roading to Giant Rock. If i’m hitting some bars i’ll stop by The Gold Room in Echo Park for old times sake, and when eating out my favorite spots are in K-Town. Hangari and Sun Nong Dan are a must.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have got here without my business partners who form the yang to my yin. Ryan Douglass is a creative director with practical print knowledge, a level head and a can-do attitude. Casey Stone is our fabrication director who makes our creative come to life, solves practical problems and manages our shop space in Joshua Tree.
