We had the good fortune of connecting with Nupeir Garret and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nupeir, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I felt incomplete when I didn’t follow my passions. I didn’t even have a plan after I graduated at California State University, of Sacramento. I got my degree in Theater & Dance in 2012. All I knew, it was either New York or Los Angeles. Los Angeles was a lot closer drive from Sacramento and my cousin Kael told me I could crash on his couch. I took that opportunity and ran with it!

It has been nothing but a dog fight ever since I been out here, to be honest. It is a grind from sun up and sun down. But I absolutely love it. I love seeing how my dreams come into a reality.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My acting and dance career has been a journey to say the least. Determination and an unstoppable drive has kept me going. I moved to Los Angles in 2013 and I knew I would not stop until I succeeded. I stayed in acting and dance classes. I Kept auditioning and being relentless. I found out that building relationships were key to building my career. I could only go so far by myself. At one point, I needed a team to expand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places to go is beaches, movies, and restaurants. First, gotta hit up Manhattan Beach. Love the view especially all the beach front homes. Its clean and it has a chill vibe. To bonfire, gotta hit up Dockwilder Beach.

For the restaurants, it depends on my mood. Joey DTLA if I want a mellow mood for drinks and food with a nice ambiance. El Torito for tacos and margaritas. The Point in El Segundo for an outdoor vibe with different restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out the Theater & Dance Department of Sacramento State Univ. It taught me all the fundamentals that I still use daily. It helped me realize how to find myself through movement, and how to convey it to an audience.

I was astonished when I found out I could make a career out of creating! So far, I performed on: cruise ships (Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines), commercials (Nike, Adidas, Nissan, etc..), TV Shows (SWAT, Ultimate Tag, Snowfall) and Films (Thursday, Between Forever).

But besides the industry, I love being a dance instructor at Equinox and BayClubs. So in all, the theater and dance department made me realize I had a choice to live a life that I love and envision for myself.
