We had the good fortune of connecting with Ovcharka Industries and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ovcharka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our thought process behind starting our own business stemmed from a lifelong interest in illustration and animation, dating back to our school days. At one point, we simply decided to venture into freelancing. Concurrently, we embarked on numerous personal projects, which captivated us immensely. We created an Instagram account and began the quest to define our unique style. Initially, it was far from what we produce now, but over time, we managed to discover what truly resonates with us.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our art is based on the rubber hose style, but what sets us apart is the bold imagery typically addressing contemporary societal issues. Often, it revolves around parties and drugs, featuring acid-like characters and insanity, all infused with dark humor.
We’ve reached these heights simply because we were deeply passionate about what we do. We practically lived at our computers, working every day and constantly evolving. While there were tough times and burnouts, taking breaks always reignited our desire to continue, especially when we saw the results of our efforts. Our motivation only grew stronger.
One of the key lessons, cliché as it may sound, is to never give up and keep going, even when things don’t go as planned.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Currently, we live on a small island in Thailand, so I would take my friend for a hike to the waterfalls or play frisbee on the beach, simply go biking around the island, and maybe try some kite surfing. Thailand is renowned for its unique and delicious cuisine, so I’d take my friend to a local Thai eatery or night market, and definitely recommend trying pad Thai and mango sticky rice! On the island, we’ve built a vibrant community of artists and creative individuals, so I’d definitely take my friend there. There are always plenty of interesting people and events happening, like crafting masks all week and ending with a mask-themed motorcycle parade around the island followed by an evening art exhibition. And also, the burgers in this place are absolutely delicious.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We draw our inspiration primarily from the cartoons of the 1930s, classic animation like “Rubber Hose,” and a childhood steeped in Disney animations, which heavily influenced our style. We have a particular fondness for the works of Tex Avery.
