We had the good fortune of connecting with Pablo Mirete and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pablo, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music has always been my passion, so I never felt like I had much of a choice. Working in a creative field is strange because often, we’re dragged into the “workforce” by something that feels like a hobby or a game. I’ve been very serious about this since I was very young. However, pursuing production, composition, etc. in a conscious manner always came out of pure love for music. As hard as this career can be, every step forward is worth it. The people you meet. The music you make… I always say this but it’s true: this profession has given me everything I have. I’m a very curious person, and I love many other fields. Technology, computers, languages… I could have done countless other things passionately but it’s been music that always stuck by me, so it never felt like a choice.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make music that helps me connect and learn more about people, the world, and myself. Making songs, composing, etc. has always been my best bet at articulating what I think and feel, so it’s become a necessity for me. I care very much about music and about the people I make music with. It’s a magical feeling when I get to surprise artists/filmmakers or when something I’ve worked on resonates with the listener. It’s incredible.

I think something unique about my work is the different backgrounds it comes from. I love modern “pop” production and basically, anything involving computers and machines. However, I also grew up with orchestral, jazz, and Latin-American music. I’m not the type of person who likes to put labels on things. Much less art. However, I realize we all have innate tendencies. And even though I sometimes have to suppress mine for a project, something I’m drawn to is exploring the intersection of organic and synthetic. I often find myself trying to make synthesized sounds more natural and expressive but also pushing and processing acoustic or sampled instruments to see what they can become… Emotion and vision are always paramount to me though, so I’ll work to achieve that without getting too caught up in labels or genres. Whatever works, works!

Looking ahead, I’m very excited about my personal project right now. I can’t say much about it yet but after lots of blood, sweat, and tears, my first project as an artist is in postproduction at RG Music where I work as a Record Producer, Audio Engineer, and A&R. I’m thrilled about that too because we recently installed Dolby Atmos, and have plenty of incredible projects in the making. A recent one we just released is “Gospel Symphony, Vol. I”, a rare Symphonic Gospel album by Rebeca Rods and Black Light Gospel Choir I got to work on.

And finally, a recent cause for celebration has to do with Umbrellas (2020), an animated short film I made the music for during lockdown. This beautiful film was nominated for the Goya Awards this year –which are Spain’s main national film awards– and my compositions won the Best Soundtrack at the Fugaz Awards. This means I’ll get to be a member of the jury from now on, which is an amazing honor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting LA, the trip would start in Silver Lake, where I live. I love getting lost in the neighborhood (although that’s getting harder the more I get lost), stumbling across coffee shops, and odd, never-ending stairs… Silver Lake and Los Feliz are very unique in that sense. Coming from Boston, I don’t know if I would have adapted well hadn’t I started somewhere where I could go out for actual WALKS. Anyway, as the evening falls, more walking down Sunset Boulevard is always a safe bet. Then, tacos for dinner, and… this is foreshadowing the rest of the week. Food, food, food. K-Town, Thai Town, Little Tokyo, Taco Trucks. It’s honestly a mystery how people go on diets here because everything tastes so good.

At some point, we would also have to go to East LA to have some food. I mean, fun. In my experience, you can pick any random bar at night and have a great time. People in East LA know this. Then, for a radical change, Venice and Santa Monica. The ocean is a must, and I personally don’t know how I don’t go down more often. But it’s good to know it’s nearby… traffic willing. The Huntington Gardens are another gem hidden in plain sight, and so is Mulholland Drive at night.

It’s impossible to make LA justice in just a week, but before the end of the visit, we would have to go to Olvera Street for some history, walk around DTLA, and try to squeeze in Pasadena and a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Too much to do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has always been my strongest pillar. I come from a modest community but no matter what, my family always got my back. Growing up, my parents worked really hard to give my sister and I the best opportunities they could afford. We never had expensive stuff or traveled during holidays but they NEVER said no to a book or a lesson. I owe them so much.

Away from home, I’ve also had incredible people and organizations who somehow, popped up in my life when I needed help or guidance the most. Carlos Rodgarman and Guillermo Marin, Cristina Abaroa, Daniel Galindo, Juan Carlos Enriquez, my Latin Grammy family, Ruta Quetzal… Too many to name. But without them, I don’t think I’d be here today. Thank you! I don’t think you’re fully aware of the impact you have on people around you.
