We had the good fortune of connecting with Pamela Corey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pamela, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When I was starting my business it was important to me to build it on a foundation of trust while establishing a high degree of comfort with me, and providing very personalized and outstanding service. My clients see their companion animals as family members, and I respect that they are trusting me to work with them. Working with animals requires a lot of love and patience, and so I enjoy taking my time with clients, and providing them with a wonderful, extremely personal experience. Seeing the images we’ve captured often brings my (human) clients to tears, and when that happens I know I’ve hit a home run 🙂

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had a deep love and respect for animals. My joy in photographing them comes not only from taking a wonderful image, but more importantly from capturing the true personality and essence of each individual. This is what truly sets my work apart from the other pet photographers out there. I offer my clients a completely customized experience that they remember forever, and images unlike anything they’ve ever seen of their fur family.

I love that I have the ability to connect with animals (and people) in order to bring out those unique quirks so that I can create outstanding imagery. What I do is deceptively difficult and requires immense patience and a specific skill set that I worked very hard to master. I have hundreds of pet shoots under my belt, and I’m very proud of the work I’ve put in to hone my skills in order to be able to capture the images that I create.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places to take visitors in Los Angeles is to the Huntington Gardens. It’s not a typical tourist destination, which is what I love about it. I love making a reservation for High Tea and then walking the gardens after that. All of my out of town guests I’ve taken there are

I’m very fortunate to live in a wonderfully walk-able area. I take my out of town guests walking down Melrose Ave to window shop, and stop in the Village Idiot for a pint, or even walk to The Grove for an afternoon.

And of course, no visitor’s trip would be complete without a visit to the beach! I love driving up to Malibu and having brunch at Paradise Cove, sitting with our feet in the sand and hearing them ring the bell when a whale is spotted off shore. Then as we come back down the coast we’ll stop in Santa Monica to stroll the pier, take a ride on the Ferris wheel, and find a nice spot to eat on the 3rd Street Promenade! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have had support in getting to where I am as a photographer today. Lauren Rinder has been my mentor ever since I decided to make the leap from the corporate world into the world of photography. He took me under his wing and shared his vast knowledge of everything from workflow to lighting techniques, always generously shared his time and knowledge. He encouraged me as I worked in a variety of areas of photography, and once I found my way to pet photography, he celebrated my success.
