Meet Pao Ju Chen | Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pao Ju Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pao Ju, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a freelance illustrator from Taiwan, finding a balance between work and life has been crucial for me. Initially, after graduating from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art), I struggled to manage my time effectively. I often overworked myself and even sacrificed weekends for work. Additionally, during periods of low commissions, I felt lost and unsure of what to do.
However, through experience and a few burnouts, I have learned to improve my work-life balance. I now maintain a weekly list of illustrations to complete, organizing them based on estimated time requirements. It is essential for me to incorporate breaks into my schedule and allow myself to relax on weekends. I’ve come to understand that taking care of my well-being, both mentally and physically, is crucial for producing high-quality artwork.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m Pao Ju Chen, a Taiwanese illustrator known for my vibrant and whimsical artwork that taps into the inner child in everyone. Drawing inspiration from the colorful wildlife of my upbringing, with a BFA in General Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, I’ve dedicated myself to honing my skills and refining my artistic vision.
My professional journey began in 2021 when I embarked on a creative adventure, using my illustrations as a means to express my emotions and bring joy to others. I’m driven by the desire to provide comfort and happiness to people worldwide through my imaginative artworks. One of my recent milestones was the publication of my alphabet book titled “What animal is this? My first animal alphabet book: a to z, bo to er, Hokkien and Hakka” (released in 2023) by the independent publisher “Small Small Bookshop”. This unique book not only teaches children Mandarin, English, Hokkien, and Hakka but also immerses readers in a heartwarming world of animals brought to life through my illustrations.
There were definitely challenges along my journey. When I first started creating children’s books, I faced numerous rejections. During moments of discouragement, I reminded myself that it’s okay to feel this way. However, I also held onto my strong desire to share my artwork with more people. That determination kept me going, refusing to give up and continuing to create. I firmly believed that one day, someone would appreciate my work, and that belief propelled me forward.
Ultimately, I want the world to see me as an artist who spreads joy, evokes emotions, and creates whimsical narratives through my art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would love to show my friend around Taipei, Taiwan! I would take them to explore Taipei’s vibrant art scene. Our first stop would be the Huashan 1914 Creative Park, which is a cultural hub brimming with art exhibitions, design shops, and indie cafes. We would also visit the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, where we can appreciate contemporary art installations and browse unique crafts.
To satisfy our taste buds, we would indulge in the delectable delights of the night markets. We would sample various street food delicacies and, of course, treat ourselves to some delicious boba tea. It’s the perfect way to experience the local cuisine and immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Taipei.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my art-making journey, there are numerous individuals and groups who deserve recognition and credit for their support and influence. First and foremost, I am incredibly grateful for my family, whose unwavering support enabled me to pursue my education abroad and become an illustrator. My partner has been a constant source of encouragement, always inspiring me to nurture my creativity. Additionally, my friends form an invaluable support system, offering love and encouragement during times of self-doubt. To all these wonderful people, I truly appreciate their significant role in shaping my journey and contributing to my achievements.
