Meet Patty Perreira: Co-founder and designer, Barton Perreira

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patty Perreira and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patty, what is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
Barton Perreira has a relentless dedication to our craft and passion to create product without compromise.  With over 30 years of experience and a background in design and production, I have fine-tuned our process.  We pride ourselves in focusing on quality and not cutting production to turn better profits. My design process is quite instinctual. I prefer not to follow trends. When you go against the grain, it usually stands the test of time.

Tell us more about your professional life and career. Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand story?
I am a self-taught designer. I honed my skills for 18 years at Oliver Peoples as well as serving as a creative consultant on eyewear collections for Prada, Miu Miu, Jil Sander, Paul Smith and more. After the sale of the company in 2006, I joined forces with Bill Barton and together we founded Barton Perreira in 2007.  We wanted to continue and build upon what we had done at Oliver Peoples. Our shared feeling is and was that we could make amazing eyewear – quality, fit and design.

Building a brand and growing a business is never easy and it’s important to choose your partners wisely.  There are so many competitors and shifts in retail and consumer needs. There is so much noise out there, I prefer to stay in my own lane. I always try to remain true to myself and my craft.  What inspires me as a designer also fuels my passion.  In order to be successful and to create something special you have to be relentless and unapologetically determined.  You can’t please everybody. Deliver quality. Treat everything like it’s your first opportunity.

My design process is unique and what I believe separates us from other brands.  I think it’s all about attention to detail. To have every pair fit perfect. To have every detail executed. The final feel of our product is different. It feels like luxury.  I have relationships with our factories that goes back decades. The factories we use in Japan are the finest eyewear manufacturers in the world.  Dedication to hand-craftsmanship is always at the core of our design process. Barton Perreira frames are artisanal, handmade products by Japanese factories that are generations old.  We work with our artisans who lean heavily on heritage of crafting the best eyewear in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. in your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
