We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Rosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
As an artist I’ve always been aware that the most important thing for any creator is to have fun in the process of creating and truly enjoy what you are doing. It wasn’t really a “decision”. It has been a way of living. I really can’t imagine myself getting bored with my work. I only paint when I feel like telling a story or send a message to the world or to myself. I don’t force anything and I don’t impose any discipline to my creative process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved to write, to draw and to paint. Since 2004 I’ve decide to try to paint digitally. It wasn’t an easy transition at first. It became much more interesting when I became aware of the potentialities and also the limitations of the software. Since then, has been a wonderful and permanent discouver. It still is. I began by open Photoshop and just play with it. I decided to not get into learning courses. I’m completely self-taught and I truly think it’s the best way to learn. On one hand, you manage to create your own unique techniques. On the other, you avoid vicious tricks. It can take you much more time to achive the result but it also make the process more enjoyable. There’s no rush for my work since I believe the ideas need some maturation. I enjoy the fact that a particular artpiece takes some months to finish. I think this long period of time is really needed for what I like to express. It’s also a process of self knowledge for me. I like to take long and be very conscious of what I’m doing. I discouver myself in the process too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As I’m living in Lisbon, I’ve no doubt I’d take my friend for a nice dinner in a traditional fado house in one of the typical districts. Bairro Alto or Alfama, for example. Lisbon has a variety of fado houses. This is a unique experience. It also has many monuments like the Jeronimos Monastery and São Jorge Castle (dating back to the 1st century BC). I’d also take my friend to Sintra to visit the Pena Palace, the medieval Castle of Moors and Quinta da Regaleira, Most of this things are classified as World Heritage Sites. As for the natural landscape, I’d take my friend to the beautiful southwest coast (Costa Vicentina). If we had the time, we’d embark on an adventure through the Fisherman’s Trail there, which is one of the most beautiful trails in the world.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m definitely thankful to my parents who always supported me and lately to my husband who is very supportive, encouraging and understands my need for privacy and introspection. I also want to thank Espaço Exibicionista Gallery who believed in my work some time ago and has been doing a great job in promoting it.
