We had the good fortune of connecting with Petra Zhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Becoming an animation designer To tell a story after observing the world is my life goal.

My undergraduate thesis project at SVA, Flying Turtle, a three-minute animated film that has got seven film festival selections and won one award, was born from my observation on our daily life in the world of social media. Information disseminates rapidly in social media. Hot topics comes and goes, disappears as quickly as it appears, often in an exaggerated, fast-spreading and easily replaceable fashion. In my film, one day, a girl took a photo of a turtle hanging from a fishing net as if it was flying in the sky. The girl posted the photo on the Internet with a tag Flying Turtle. The photo sparked huge discussions. Everyone from every corner was talking about the flying turtle, which even led to a trend. People began to sell Flying Turtle toys, clothes, etc., and even launched a rocket with the Flying Turtle logo. He became the most popular turtle in the world. Later, however, when the girl posted a new photo of a swimming eagle, the flying turtle was forgotten immediately. The Swimming Eagle became a new hot topic. With this story, I want to show that social media is multifaceted. Information dissemination on the one hand brings entertainment to the masses, and people can easily gain a sense of participation. On the other hand, powerful as it is, social media could be empty and meaningless. While no turtle can fly and no eagle can swim, people in the collective fervor don’t care about its truthfulness. Interestingly, my audiences gave me exactly two kinds of feedback: half of them saw the positive side of social media and thought the film has praised social media for bringing joy to people, while the other half thought the film was a satire on social media, which by itself also shows the two sides of social media.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Beijing in winter, I would craft a weeklong trip that showcases the city’s rich history, modern charm, and unique seasonal experiences. Beijing in winter is magical, with its snow-covered rooftops, bustling hutongs, and vibrant street life, creating the perfect backdrop for unforgettable memories.

In the first three days, we’d dive into Beijing’s historical wonders. We’d start with a visit to Tian’anmen Square, where the grand scale and historical significance set the tone for the trip. Next, we’d explore the Forbidden City, which is breathtaking in winter as the snow contrasts beautifully with its red walls and golden roofs. A walk through its serene courtyards would feel like stepping back in time. On the second day, we’d venture to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. There’s something extraordinary about seeing this iconic structure dusted with snow—it’s as if history comes alive in the crisp winter air. After a day of hiking and soaking in the views, we’d enjoy a hearty countryside meal nearby. For our third day, we’d visit the Temple of Heaven, where the calm of the winter season amplifies its spiritual atmosphere. Afterward, we’d wander through Beijing’s historic hutongs, stopping to admire the traditional architecture and savor snacks from small, cozy eateries.

The fourth day would be dedicated to relaxation. After the physical exertion of the previous days, we’d take it easy with a visit to a nearby shopping mall. Here, we’d browse local stores, try some modern Beijing cuisine, and maybe catch a movie or sip on specialty tea. This day would allow us to recharge while still immersing ourselves in Beijing’s contemporary culture.

On the fifth day, we’d embrace the joy of winter by heading to Shichahai Park, where the frozen lake offers unique ice activities. Skating, sledding, and riding ice bicycles are quintessential winter experiences in Beijing, blending tradition and fun. Afterward, we’d explore the surrounding area, including the historic Drum and Bell Towers, before enjoying a traditional Beijing dinner at a nearby restaurant.

The sixth day would be all about modern thrills at Universal Studios Beijing. Spending a day at the park, immersing ourselves in its incredible rides and attractions, would bring out our inner children. From themed dining experiences to a dazzling evening show, the day would be packed with excitement and joy.

Finally, on the last day, we’d reflect on our week while enjoying a relaxed morning walk through a nearby park or temple. A farewell brunch featuring traditional Beijing delicacies like soy milk and youtiao would mark the end of the trip. Saying goodbye would be bittersweet, but I’d know my friend was leaving with a deep appreciation for the history, culture, and vibrancy of Beijing in winter.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I met my teacher while working on my graduation project, and he quickly became one of the most influential people in my life. He is not only incredibly kind and generous but also deeply dedicated to his students’ growth and success. He taught us with care and patience, offering detailed suggestions for our projects and taking the time to analyze the state of the industry with us. He guided us on how to prepare for the job market, sharing invaluable insights and advice. Remarkably, he never asked for anything in return, always saying that helping us brought him joy.

My teacher’s dedication and selflessness have left a lasting impact on me, not only in art but also in how I approach life. His passion for teaching and genuine care for his students inspire me to follow in his footsteps. I hope to one day become the kind of person who can make such a positive difference in others’ lives, just as he has in mine.
