We had the good fortune of connecting with Peyton Shay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peyton, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music, to me, is all about speaking the truth in a way that sometimes were too afraid or unable to speak on directly. I’m a dreamer, so creating stories about my future before I fall asleep is a part of my nightly routine. In the big picture, my main mission is to create art that has the power to connect, heal, and communicate for the greater good. Art shouldn’t have an expiration date, which is why I could only ever hope that my words and messages I communicate through my songs have some form of longevity. When someone listens to my music, I want them to create and build their vision and the world around it, just as I did when I sat down to write it. Honestly, it’s for this reason that I always feel so insanely connected to the audience when I perform.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hi! My name is Peyton Shay, and I’m a 19-year-old artist from Los Angeles. I grew up in a small town isolated just outside the city, which inevitably led me to boredom and discovering my passion for music and storytelling. I went from the innocent girl who was always cast in horror shows to writing sad, happy, and just about any other type of song. I now use my music almost as a coming-of-age diary, mixed with some fangirling over modern and classic musical figures. I’ve spent the greater portion of this year writing, performing, and making music. I’m pretty impatient when it comes to releasing music, so holding this new music in has definitely been a challenge. I have new songs, videos, and more that I’m releasing this year. I’m also performing a collection of unreleased songs with Writers Block at the end of this month, which I’m really excited about. Tickets are actually on sale now!
There will always be positives and negatives with everything you do in life. However, I believe mindset chooses the path of those experiences. Personally, I find myself wanting to compare my journey to others. I think this is something many of us relate to; the constant pressure or anxiety that you’re not achieving enough or that you should be further along than you are. But I’ve learned that life is about breaking your own limits and pushing your boundaries. Don’t let the perception of where you think you need to be, dictate the progress of your success. Now onto the easy part-the positives. As an artist, although I am able to share my passion for music, my purpose runs much deeper. Music connects people from all walks of life. If we can listen to complete strangers and feel what they are feeling, maybe we’re not as different as we think. My music has always reflected my life: I create stories out of everything that I go through. Being a young artist, my audience and I can grow up together; it’s pretty cool. As we navigate through life, I can undoubtedly count on them to be there every step of the way…and vice versa!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is full of amazing places. I personally love a good breakfast and brunch spot. One of my favorite local cafes is Kings Road, I definitely recommend their breakfast burritos. Activity-wise, Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica Pier, and Malibu are some of my favorite spots.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m a big believer in making a conscious effort in the people you surround yourself with. My friends, family, and close-knit team deserve so much credit and thanks. Having people believe in you is truly special and something I do not take for granted.
