Meet Priscilla Ortiz | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Priscilla Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Priscilla, how do you think about risk?
Throughout my creative career I have taken risks in my work by experimenting and blending classic oil painting with new media and technology. This willingness to embrace risk and innovation has not only defined my artistic style but has also allowed me to push the boundaries of traditional art forms. One of my most notable projects involved integrating augmented reality (AR) technology into my paintings, creating an immersive and interactive experience for viewers.
By combining classic oil painting techniques with AR elements, I aimed to bridge the gap between the tangible and digital worlds. Viewers could use their smartphones or tablets to unlock hidden layers within the artwork, revealing additional dimensions and narratives that enriched the overall storytelling aspect of my pieces. This exploration of mixed media not only challenged my technical skills but also encouraged me to think beyond conventional artistic media.
Despite the inherent challenges and uncertainties that come with pushing artistic boundaries, I firmly believe that taking risks is essential for growth and evolution as an artist. It’s through these bold explorations that I have discovered new avenues for self-expression, gained a deeper understanding of the ever-changing art landscape, and connected with audiences on a more profound level.
As I continue on this creative journey, I remain committed to pushing the envelope, constantly seeking innovative ways to communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives through my art. My ongoing exploration of the intersection between traditional techniques and emerging technologies serves not only as a personal artistic expression but also as a contribution to the evolving dialogue within the contemporary art world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a dynamic blend of traditional techniques and cutting-edge technology, reflecting a continuous exploration of the intersection between the tangible and the digital. What sets me apart is my commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, whether through the incorporation of augmented reality into my paintings or experimenting with new media art, video installation, and soundscaping.
Currently, I am working on a new series that transcends the conventional boundaries of artistic expression. This series delves into the symbiotic relationship between emotionality and harmony (as in music), capturing the essence of their coexistence in a visually captivating manner. Each piece in the series serves as a visual narrative, telling stories of harmonious convergence or thought-provoking contrasts between the analog and the digital, and more importantly emotions and the rhythmic cadence of life itself. The exploration of emotionality and harmony extends beyond the visual aesthetics, weaving into the very fabric of each artwork the nuanced interplay between human emotions and the rhythmic elements found in music. The series delves into the intricate dance between analog emotions and the digital expressions of harmony, creating a tapestry that mirrors the diverse spectrum of human experiences. Emotions are not merely depicted; they are embedded in the strokes, the hues, and the digital elements, forming a dialogue that speaks to the universal language of the human soul. As viewers engage with the artworks, they are invited to embark on a contemplative journey, exploring the nuanced connections between their own emotional landscapes and the harmonies reverberating within the artistic composition.
The path to my current position in the art world has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. It wasn’t easy to establish myself, especially as I navigated the uncharted territory of blending traditional art with emerging technologies. However, the support of the galleries and art brokers that represent me is a crucial foundation. Their encouragement allowed me to take risks and pursue projects that shaped my unique artistic voice. I am particularly proud of my ability to seamlessly fuse classic oil painting with new media, creating immersive and interactive experiences for viewers. The excitement lies in the constant evolution of my work, fueled by a curiosity to experiment with different media and technologies. Overcoming challenges involved a combination of resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning. I embraced setbacks as opportunities for growth and sought inspiration from diverse sources, be it cultural influences from my travels or collaborations with experts in technology.
One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of staying true to my artistic vision while remaining adaptable to the evolving landscape of the art world. Embracing change and being open to new ideas has been instrumental in my growth. Experimentation has also been a driving force in my journey, as it has allowed me to expand my horizons and contribute to the broader artistic dialogue.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is the commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, fostering innovation, and creating meaningful connections through art. My work is a reflection of a constant pursuit of the extraordinary within the ordinary, and I hope to inspire others to embrace creativity, take risks, and explore the limitless possibilities at the intersection of tradition and technology.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up on Melrose and live in Huntington Beach—I’m an Angeleno through and through. My favorite spots include the eclectic mix of cultural experiences and vibrant neighborhoods that Los Angeles has to offer. From the trendy boutiques and street art on Melrose Avenue, where I first discovered my love for art, to the laid-back and sun-soaked atmosphere of Huntington Beach, my current coastal haven.
In Los Angeles, I find inspiration in the diverse art scenes, from the prestigious galleries in Downtown LA to the underground art spaces in Hermosa Beach. Exploring the city’s culinary landscape is another passion of mine, and you’ll often find me indulging in the diverse flavors of Koreatown or enjoying a beachfront seafood feast in Malibu. The Griffith Observatory holds a special place in my heart, offering breathtaking views of the city and serving as a reminder of the vast possibilities that Los Angeles presents. I visit The Getty often, it’s always an incredible cultural journey through the ages; from ancient sculptures to Renaissance masterpieces, the museum’s meticulously curated galleries provide a captivating exploration of diverse cultures and artistic movements. Huntington Beach, with its iconic pier and golden sand, has become my refuge—a place where the soothing sound of waves complements the creative rhythm of my work. I cherish the laid-back beach culture, spending weekends catching waves or strolling along the vibrant Main Street lined with charming shops and cafes. Of course, as a music lover, attending a performance at iconic venues like the Troubadour, The Venice West, The Greek, or the Hollywood Bowl is an essential and highly enjoyable experience.
Ultimately, being an Angeleno means embracing the dynamic energy of the city and the diverse tapestry of experiences it offers. Whether I’m immersed in the urban art scene, checking out a band at my favorite music venue, or enjoying the coastal tranquility, Los Angeles has played an integral role in shaping my identity as an artist and a true lover of this sprawling, ever-inspiring metropolis.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful for my parent’s unwavering emotional support throughout my artistic journey. Their belief in my creative potential has been a constant pillar, allowing me to navigate the challenges of the art world with confidence. From the early stages of my career, when I was experimenting with different styles and struggling to find my artistic identity, my parents stood by me. Their encouragement fueled my determination during moments of self-doubt, and their constructive feedback became a valuable compass guiding my artistic development.
In addition, my creative friends, gallery representatives, and artistic mentors have played a vital role in cultivating a strong sense of resilience within me. The art world can be unpredictable, with highs and lows that can challenge even the most established artists. Their wisdom and guidance have been a source of strength, helping me navigate setbacks and see them as opportunities for learning and growth. A very special shoutout to Shockboxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach and Hive Gallery in Downtown LA for their continued support throughout the years. In essence, the support of my gallery representatives has been the bedrock upon which my artistic journey has flourished. Their belief in my potential has allowed me to transform my artistic aspirations into a reality. As I continue to evolve as an artist, their unwavering support remains a driving force, reminding me that creative endeavors are not solitary pursuits but a collaborative and deeply connected journey.
