We had the good fortune of connecting with Qiana Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Qiana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind launching my business was a slow yet steady one. I was trying to figure out my path after experiencing a failing economy in 2009, where I had worked in the fashion industry in a corporate executive role but was laid off. I began working as a writer and journalist, interviewing people in various sectors. While the benefits were attending major events and press passes, I was taking unpaid or low-paid assignments for the experience. I knew I needed to monetize my skills better. I decided to venture into the PR world, producing live events and, eventually, radio and podcasting. For me, it was a natural evolution.
As I took on event planning and digital media, I constantly learned. I learned SEO for assurance that my clients ranked highly on search engines and how to write an adequately optimized press release.
Since then, education has been crucial for maintaining and scaling my business to keep it afloat, especially during the pandemic. Last year, I took an online course offered by Goldman Sachs called 10,000 Women, which taught me valuable business and leadership skills. In June of 2022, I became certified by Google in Data Analytics with R Programming.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Goddess Media aids in creating or refreshing a business’ social media and online presence, polished presentation of their marketing materials, website, social media pages, and digital advertising. I capture a company’s voice, boost its online ranking, and drive traffic and sales through data analysis and online campaigns.
Being a business owner is not easy, and I think the challenges are a positive part of the process. When I think about the millions of dollars I’ve generated in revenue for the corporations I worked for in the past, I know I will do it for my own business.
My biggest challenge has always been remaining dedicated to the process, even when there are no sales and no clients. So many people- including family- have advised me in the past to go ‘back to a regular job,’ but 9-5 mindsets cannot understand the level of commitment required to bet the house on yourself. It’s an all-or-nothing mentality. My down times in business are when I pivot and focus on gathering more education and certifications to add to my arsenal. This assures my skillsets are always current, and I can provide the best quality services to my clientele when steady business returns.
I want the world to know that I grew up impoverished, with little access to higher education or opportunities, and was told that I couldn’t- a lot. My dreams were to act and sing, but my mother didn’t believe in pursuing creative talents as a career. My drive to do better and create more for myself and my family was born in New York City’s projects. You become entirely unstoppable when you put your mind to something and ignore the naysayers and negativity. I’m still actively in pursuit of my creative goals. I’ve already ventured into some independent acting roles, but later this year, people will also receive my musical gifts. Never- ever- give up on your dreams because if you can visualize them in your mind, you can make them happen in real life.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to begin by dedicating my shoutout to my 6 children because they are the reason that I am driven to succeed every single day. I also want to shout out to my clients, past, present, and future, and thank them for their business, continued support, and referrals. I’d follow with a special shoutout to my VPR Radio partner, DJFMi. He’s been the cornerstone of our radio and podcast venture, and I am eternally grateful that he decided to join me on this journey.
Lastly, my circle of love, aka my moon circle, deserves honorable recognition. They are my little family of entrepreneurs and my best friends. We all work hard in our own businesses and ideas while encouraging and supporting one another. Entrepreneurs must surround themselves with individuals that will feed them positive energy and inspired advice, especially when they are ready to throw in the towel!
