We had the good fortune of connecting with Qirui Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Qirui, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Originating from China and enriched by an undergraduate exchange program, my journey has been a fusion of cultural experiences. Settling in the USA for my master’s degree and career in design, I’ve embraced a path that marries my artistic inclinations with a passion for science.

From the tender age of youth, I already found design and art. I spent hours in front of the desk and kept drawing images, envisioning a world where my creations resonated with others. This childhood dream evolved into a deeper understanding during my academic pursuits, where I discovered the harmonious blend of architecture and UX design. Initially trained as an architect, I later transitioned seamlessly into the realm of UX design, finding profound fulfillment in crafting meaningful digital experiences.

Today, as a UX/UI Product Designer, I reflect on the diverse influences that have shaped my identity and professional trajectory. Each stroke of my journey, from childhood sketches to intricate design solutions, speaks to a narrative woven with curiosity, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to innovation.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Throughout my career, I’ve embraced a creative and self-motivated approach to product design, honing my expertise across diverse platforms including mobile, responsive websites, B2B, B2C, and trading platforms. What sets me apart is my ability to implement a cohesive design language across these varied mediums, ensuring a seamless user experience.

My time at HSBC stands as a testament to my strategic acumen and innovative drive. Spearheading the strategy planning and design initiatives for the Wealth Personal Banking Bond mobile and website platforms, I achieved remarkable results, including a significant increase in digital penetration and revenue. Notably, this project won two prestigious awards from Bloomberg Businessweek. This experience not only solidified my understanding of user behavior but also underscored the importance of aligning design with overarching business objectives.

However, reaching this point wasn’t without its challenges. I’ve always believed in pushing beyond comfort zones and exploring new territories. Embracing unfamiliar domains and constantly seeking to learn and adapt has been pivotal in unlocking my full potential.

What I want the world to know about me is that I am not just a designer; I am a strategic thinker, a problem solver, and a relentless advocate for user-centric design. My brand story is one of innovation, collaboration, and a steadfast dedication to crafting experiences that resonate with users on a profound level. As I continue to evolve professionally, my mission remains unchanged: to leverage design as a catalyst for positive change and to create solutions that empower and inspire.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am still new to LA. So far I find Pasadena is a really great place to stay and explore. During a week-long trip in this city, I’d ensure my friend experiences the best of what this vibrant city has to offer. We’d start our mornings with a stroll through the iconic Pasadena Farmers’ Market, sampling fresh produce and local delicacies. Afterward, we’d explore the rich cultural scene, visiting the Norton Simon Museum and indulging in some retail therapy along Old Pasadena’s charming streets. For lunch, we’d savor eclectic cuisines at Union Restaurant, followed by an afternoon hike in the stunning Eaton Canyon Falls. Evenings would be reserved for cocktails at the speakeasy-style Blind Donkey or catching a live performance at the historic Pasadena Playhouse. Throughout the week, we’d also take advantage of Pasadena’s excellent public transportation to explore nearby attractions like Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, ensuring an unforgettable experience for my friend.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my circle of friends. Their support has been instrumental in my career transition journey. When I embarked on the path of switching careers, they stood by me, offering invaluable guidance, suggestions, and unwavering encouragement. Their collective wisdom and experiences have broadened my perspective, allowing me to see beyond the confines of my comfort zone and embrace new opportunities.

Their willingness to share their own career transitions has been incredibly inspiring. Witnessing their journeys, some of which involved bold leaps into uncharted territories, reminded me of the boundless possibilities that await those willing to embrace change. Their stories serve as powerful reminders that transformation is not only possible but also immensely rewarding. Their belief in my capabilities and their own achievements have inspired me to push beyond perceived limitations and pursue my aspirations with unwavering conviction.

In a world where change can be daunting, having friends who not only empathize but also actively uplift and empower is a blessing beyond measure. Their collective presence has been the cornerstone of my journey, reminding me that success is not a solitary pursuit but a shared triumph. To my friends, who have been my pillars of strength, mentors in disguise, and constant companions in this ever-evolving adventure, I owe a debt of gratitude that words can scarcely express.
