We had the good fortune of connecting with Quay Potts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process was simple. When you really think about it, everyone is already running their own business and the brand is yourself. When you apply for a job and go in for your interview, you are marking yourself for the position you seek and that company is outsourcing a task to your brand.
That is a very broad example but that’s how I’ve always looked at it. So taking it a step further is just cutting out the middle man and going straight to the consumer and marketing your talents for your own personal gain. Of course that comes with a whole new set of challenges which is why entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. So whether you like it or not, you are already running your own business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started about 10 years ago. Coming straight out of college and not really knowing what I wanted to do or the direction I wanted to go in. All I knew is that I wanted start and create something that I can be proud of. No desire to work for someone else in a long term type of setting. I much rather struggle to create something that is mine and something that I really enjoy doing than punch a clock and do something that doesn’t excite me.
As cliché as it sounds.. how I over come challenges is to just keep reminding myself that struggle is only temporary and as long as you have your heart in the right place than things will begin to happen for you. Just have to trust the process and stay out of your own way. Try not to fight the things that are suppose to happen. let things be what they are and just ride the wave.
Too many times people try to force things into existence rather than just letting what is suppose to happen, happen. Sometimes its hard, its suppose to be, nothing worth having comes easy but ‘if it’s hard, then do it hard’.
What I want the world to know about me and my story is that you can come from the harshest of circumstances and turn things around. You need to keep smiling even if you have nothing to smile about. Keep laughing when nothing is funny and keep your shirt clean even though your getting dragged through the mud.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not much of a ‘go out and have fun’ type of guy. I love doing Lowkey type of stuff like me and my girlfriend Steph love hosting game nights at home or if there is snow in the mountains, grab the boards and hit some slopes. Other than that, I’m working or watching movies.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely credit my success to the life I was brought up in and the harsh lessons I was forced to learn at a young age. And countless amount of mentors, friends, family etc. that has helped me along the way. Way too many names to mention but definitely my Parents. Both my mom and my dad set the standard from the very beginning and that is where I get my work ethic from.
