We had the good fortune of connecting with Qurissy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Qurissy, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My take on balance has undergone a profound shift. I’ve come to realize that balance isn’t necessarily about equality across all aspects of life but, rather, about ensuring equity based on the specific needs of each category. Over the years, I’ve experienced seasons where different facets of my life demanded varying levels of attention.

To prevent anything from falling by the wayside, I’ve adopted a nuanced approach. For instance, during a period where my work demands less attention, I might channel more focus into relationships, personal health goals, and leisure. This approach works conversely as well. This framework has allowed me to establish a healthier relationship with the concept of balance overall.

By acknowledging the fluidity of life’s demands and adjusting my priorities accordingly, I’ve cultivated a more adaptive and sustainable approach to achieving balance in the various aspects of my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m passionate about the way I create, and one aspect I truly love is the wealth of stories that unfold in the process. Take my series, “Photographer’s Sight,” for example. In this project, I had the privilege of interviewing nine incredible image makers who navigate their creative journeys with poor eyesight. Exploring their relationships with sight and its impact on their artistic paths and sense of self has been a profound experience.

My inherent curiosity has honed my ability to ask genuine, thought-provoking questions to my subjects, myself, and my audience. The conversations sparked by this project have been a source of pride for me. It’s not just about sharing stories; it’s about initiating moments of introspection with friends and strangers alike. These dialogues become a journey of self-discovery for everyone involved.

I’m particularly excited about the possibilities for this project. My dream is to take it further, partnering with an eyewear company to delve deeper into these stories. Collaborating in this way would not only expand the reach of the project but also foster meaningful connections and insights into the creative process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestie was visiting and I wanted to plan a cute Sunday in LA, I’d start by grabbing some lemon herb chicken plates from Jerusalem Chicken. We’d then head over to Leimert Park for a laid-back picnic. After enjoying our meal, we’d take a leisurely walk down the strip, exploring the various vendors. Perhaps, we’d pick up a few items from Nappily Naturals Apothecary to wrap up our day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love shouting out the homies! I’m all about celebrating my friends, and today, I want to give a massive shoutout to Dakotah Whiting. She’s not just a friend; she’s an incredible photographer originally hailing from Minneapolis and now making waves in Los Angeles, Dakotah is crafting some incredible visual stories.
