We had the good fortune of connecting with Rama Mayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rama, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Perseverance. Perseverance to me is why we get anywhere. One of my mentors, Dr. Romanelli, would always say that it takes ten years to build a brand. I didn’t really believe him until we started working together for a long time… ten years later, now we have Green Street.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Andy Warhol said, “making money is the best art.” So, for me, the way I approach my business, is through the lens of someone that is a major art collector, had an art gallery for maybe ten years. As for myself, I am creating my own contemporary artwork and paintings, sculptures, and other things. But ultimately, business is art. What sets us apart from everybody else is we started making the business when we didn’t care about making money– we knew money would follow. I think it’s really hard these days to start a company with financial gains being the least of concerns.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re coming to Los Angeles, you need to come and check out the Green Street building in Downtown. You can walk to a bunch of great hotels like Ace Hotel and Freehand. As for food, you can walk to a bunch of amazing restaurants like Sonoratown, Dune, Petit Peso, eat in our building at Gusto Green, or walk to Uncle Paulie’s and get their meatball parm. If you’re leaving Downtown, you’re going directly to Jon & Vinny’s and staying there for at least two meals. Maybe breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner– it’s that good. After that, I think the only thing left is the beach. Head over to Malibu and enjoy the Pacific.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would be to my mom. She was super encouraging of me starting my own business, would drop me off at the shows that I would end up producing, let me borrow her car to do anything I wanted, bought me my first skateboard, other stuff like that. She’s for sure the most influential person in my life. As for a group or an organization that has had an impact on me, I’d say the skateboarding scene and the punk rock music scene. Both skateboarding and punk rock– back then especially– the idea of DIY (do-it-yourself) was such a big part of the scenes that it really taught me that I could book my own concerts or my own shows or festivals; I could build my own skate ramps which has evolved into the construction of the Green Street building.
