We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Kulina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Randy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an creative career based on the interests of my childhood. I was always a creative person from creative writing to painting to modeling clay and everything in between. One thing that was constant throughout my childhood was my love of movies and moreso my love of telling stories through the art form of creating movies. I was very fortunate to find a video camera in my hands at a very young age and even more fortunate that I had a neighborhood of friends that were willing to help capture these stories on hi-8 tape. This love blossomed into an education in film and TV and now a career in film and TV. I have always loved telling stories, and the fact that I am lucky enough to have a career in telling stories makes me beyond grateful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I stay extremely busy producing a very wide variety of content. Initially I got my start in narrative filmmaking and I am grateful to say that I just wrapped producing my fifth feature film, The Company of Thieves which was directed by the very talented Vidu Roopan. This is a project that I am very excited about sharing with folks since it is my first time being involved in a western, which has always been one of my favorite genres.

Earlier in my producing career I obtained work within the comedy niche and I quickly discovered that comedy specials are extremely enjoyable to work on. During COVID, a time that everyone had to adapt, I adapted by learning everything that I could in regards to streaming and I was fortunate to go down the road of producing some very successful pay per view comedy shows with an amazing team. This includes over thirty volumes of Keep Your Distance which is now available on Amazon Prime. The other form of content creation that I pride myself in is international storytelling. To date I have worked in over twenty countries and most recently I was given the amazing opportunity to Executive Produce a travel-build show titled The Fixers which is now available on BYUtv.

Long answer short, a lot keeps me busy professionally and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am looking forward to more international producing in the future as well as furthering my comedy and feature film career. The new year is already shaping up and I am feeling very fortunate and extremely excited to be collaborating with some amazing storytellers on a few feature films that are set to be filmed in 2024.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots around are actually for the most part outside of the city. What makes Los Angeles so great is that you’re so close to the desert, mountains, snow, and surf. When a friend comes to the area and wants to experience Southern California I like to take them surfing at one of the amazing breaks off of the PCH, take them out on a hike somewhere back in the Santa Monica Mountains, get them out for a round of golf at any of the amazing tracks, and take them out to the desert to experience a landscape that most never have. I enjoy showing visitors just how quiet and serene Los Angeles actually can be.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success, as well as anyones success in any creative realm, is all due to the support and collaboration from others. Film and TV is a medium that requires an entire community. The list of folks to recognize for my success is massive, but in short includes my family who supported my passion for filmmaking ever since I was a child, my college peers who gave me my first gigs within this crazy industry, and my wife who encourages me to never give up.
