We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Morales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Randy, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to inspire others to be more than they ever imagined, to take risks, and actually follow their own dreams. I would like to be remembered for being a multi-medium creative. someone who makes art, designs fashion, writes, etc. Ideally, I would like to be known for being a creator in various mediums and producing exceptional work that evokes change within those who experience my work. In a nutshell, to reach a level in my practice similar to Virgil’s status in inspiring a movement.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art has been something I’ve done since I was a kid but suppressed due to others always saying you won’t make money as an artist. It wasn’t until 2020 during the pandemic that I decided to do what makes me happy. I was let go temporarily from my job as a fashion designer at Alo yoga during the pandemic and started to take art seriously when my TV broke, it was then that I realized that TVs are made to have pictures so I painted on one. From there, I coined my style ‘No-Pop’ which focuses on characters from my childhood cartoons in the 90s. I depict characters that spark a feeling of nostalgia by being recognizable without using overproduced iconography of that time.
I’m excited to now launch my newest series of abstract work, “Boxed Emotions” which uses my distinct marble effect that represents how it feels to keep your emotions boxed in. The black marbling reflects the negative emotions and the white represents my happiness all depicted in a box which reflects how I view it looks inside me. Through this new collection, I hope that people will find a way to express themselves like I have found this outlet to express my feelings through art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is a city of endless possibilities. I would have to do a tour of each city. In Koreatown, I would take them to a restaurant called Dan Sung Sa. Walking into this establishment is like walking into a portal outside of LA. It’s a great place to entertain friends. Heading to the arts district we have to head to my favorite bar Death and Co. this artisanal bar always gives me the dark moody vibes that I’m constantly in when I paint. If we’re getting tacos in LA no specific restaurant. the best tacos are on the street, you shouldn’t have to pay more than $2 for tacos for them to be good. In Santa Monica, we would have to go to a place called Cha Cha chicken, a family-owned restaurant that really caters to its guest and does its best to make sure your visit is memorable. On Sunday, we have to go to Melrose Trading Post and shop for the best vintage clothes as well as jewelry. I go to my jeweler, Sabina Vero since she has the best deals and the best unique silver pieces. Outside of this, the best place to be is in my art studio where we can create dope art pieces and create memories.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without being conceited, I want to thank myself and the work I put into growing as a human being. I personally feel we as creatives, business owners, and entrepreneurs don’t acknowledge ourselves for the hard sacrificing work we put in to reach our goals. It’s so easy to hit snooze, but it’s difficult to wear the many hats that come with running your own business, such as taxes or creating social media when really all you want to do is paint. What people don’t realize as a sole owner of any operation you have to do all the parts of the business even if you aren’t skilled and if you’re really serious about what you do, you force yourself to figure it out because you believe so deeply in yourself and you will do anything not to fail.
Outside of thanking myself, I believe one can’t build an empire alone. I would love to give a shoutout to my art consultant Tara Barone who is constantly pushing me as an artist, helping me reach my full potential, creating a partnership that I truly believe in, and guiding me to the next level. The Art Space Warehouse for being the very first gallery to believe in me and give me my very first consistent place to sell my artwork. They are my IV in the art world because they made me realize the potential I truly have. I would also like to recognize Karlos Marquez for mentoring me and giving me a safe space to create and master my craft. as well as inspiring me to apply to things I never would have dreamed I would be accepted into but was. Lastly my friends and family. I honestly feel so blessed to have them in my corner even though I’m never around for them because I’m too busy sacrificing my last breath to live my dream.
