We had the good fortune of connecting with Ranesha Rene’ Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ranesha Rene’, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
A habit of integrity. The ideal of upholding standards and fulfilling expectations has helped me succeed. The art of baking requires one to follow scientific principles and utilizing quality ingredients, never compromising either of the two. Early on in business I found that going the extra mile in purchasing locally sourced high quality ingredients even if it decreased my profit margins meant that my product would stand out as well as aide other small business owners in their pursuits of success.
What should our readers know about your business?
Krumblez Cookie Co. was birthed in September 2018 from my home kitchen, out of a love for cookies, a transition in my Career and a passion to add some cheer to the lives of others through cookies. Friday evenings and weekends after my full time job I’d fill orders and vend at pop up events, it became apparent a few months after starting the business that I’d need to shift to a larger space to accommodate the large orders that I would receive. I searched around and found a local “Ghost Kitchen” a concept that became notorious during the Pandemic as many restaurants transitioned to the “curbside only” service method. I have been able to keep my overhead fairly low and service more customers via curbside pickup, delivery through 3rd party Apps. and shipping options with aspirations of operating my own Cookie Bar in Downtown Eastvale in the near future.
Being a small business owner, I’m very intentional with the businesses that I patronize. From the artist that created my logo to shopping for supplies and locally sourced ingredients, it’s important for me to do my part in helping other minority owned businesses succeed. When available I purchase farm fresh eggs from a local farm, supplies, custom decor, sprinkles and merchandise from small businesses as I believe we elevate one another when we work together. We even support our local Chamber of Commerce and community groups in the IE through monthly donations of cookies to “Move Through Motivation” a non-profit that gathers members of the community to gather together and move through physical fitness. “We bake people happy!” That’s the difference between Krumblez Cookie Co. and other brands, you’re supporting a village of small businesses when you support Krumblez Cookie Co.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Los Angeles and now residing in the Inland Empire I travel back and forth to hidden gems. One of my faves is in Fontana, CA The Forum Blues Cafe housed in an old train depot, it has unique character in its edifice and location. They serve delicious waffle sandwich entrees for breakfast and lunch entrees with menu items uniquely named similar to my cookie naming convention of each cookie being named after a family member or friend. Next I’d do a little shopping in Rancho Cucamonga at Victoria Gardens, ensuring I stop by 1Love IE, a local clothing store that embodies love and unity through clothing and hats. Next I’d head down to Stanton, CA and stop by Rodeo 39 to order one of the best Detroit style pizzas worthy of every bit of traffic. Lastly we’d drive over to Leimert Park and check out some of the history of LA and support local street vendors by purchasing handmade artifacts, candles and clothing. We’d end the evening by driving over to Janga in Culver City for a take out order of “healing greens, festival bread, jerk chicken and plantain.” Dessert would of course be a box of cookies from Krumblez Cookie Co. that we ordered from krumblezcookieco.com, picked up curbside and brought along for the food crawl.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My humble beginnings began shadowing my Grandmother and the other elders in the Community of our local church in the kitchen. I found being in the kitchen a safe space that I could learn and create in. My Grandmother, who we affectionately call ‘YAH-YAH” loved cooking and saw it as a means to bring people of all walks together. It wasn’t uncommon for her to make a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner on a Sunday evening and invite family, friends and neighbors over, she cooked enough for an army as she always said it was best to have more than enough food than not enough. My passion for baking derives from the foundation she laid in the early stages of my life throughout adulthood. Patronizing local and small businesses for quality ingredients and supplies as well as making food a memorable experience that keeps customers coming back for more. I owe the late nights and early mornings of filling orders or prepping for events, the relationships built from a single cookie and the love of serving my community through cookies and cupcakes to my Yah-Yah. Her motto was “everything you do, do it with love.” Words that have resonated with me since her passing in 2018. While she is no longer physically present her spirit lives on. I incorporated her and other family members into the business as each cookie is named after someone who reminds me a particular cookie or has influenced the creation of the recipe.
