Meet Rannel Ngumuya | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rannel Ngumuya and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rannel, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is never letting my inner child & imagination go. Through all the challenges i’ve faced in my career its easy to lose focus of your original vision based on the “reality” placed in front of us. I always made sure to shape the reality in front of me by creating everything i ever imagined for myself. If i couldn’t get ahold of certain collectable art, sculptures, jewelry etc. i’d make it all myself using what i know in design, and thats just one example on a smaller scale of what i know i can accomplish through my creativity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Everything i create is a piece of my story, i’m pretty diverse in different mediums & intentional with everything i make, i always make it a goal to outdo the last piece or collection i release out to the world.
What i’m most proud and excited about is how much more forms of art i been able to learn to create past the 2D designs which is where i started. From high school i was making a lot of Mixtape covers, logos, & Merch slowly grinding myself up to doing work for a few of my favorite artist.
While turning my art into a full service for myself came learning more of the business side of things, which wasn’t easy. Although it came with its challenges i’m blessed i went through all the motions and mistakes that taught me how to take on future ones.
Ways as a creative i overcame challenges was building more of a structure on how i presented my work, first impressions matter especially dealing with large scale clients. Another skill that got me into many doors was my proof of concept strategy where Instead of just laying out past work i did and asking for a chance instead i executed the ideas i would’ve pitched as if the client already agreed on doing it to stay ahead of the curve. Sometimes it’d be a miss, but most times it solidified more than just a design placement and a chance to take on the art direction of the entire project or artist themselves.
One of the things i want people to know about me is that my purpose in creating is not just to showcase my skill in design, but also to educate and lay the foundation on finding the value of what we create. Everything i make is made with intention. i want the next artists wishing to pursue a career in design to view what i’ve been able to do in mine more as a blueprint to learn from and apply to their future careers in design.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Usually if i have friends come out to visit we always find ourselves doing something random with little to no planning, we just go where the energy takes us at the moment, but i love the museums and popping around different art events & galleries. I also am into the community events whether its going to The Black Flea market, Everyday people etc. When it comes to eating most times i’m gonna take the homies to some ethnic spots like Indian, African, or Jamaican food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off i want to thank Allah as i find balance through him on the bad & even good days i’m able to experience. I also want to thank my Mom as she’s helped support me in countless ways as well as my brothers & Dad. Following up i wanna thank my friends & the team i been blessed to have helping me push the vision/story i’m sharing with the world.
