We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel Hernandez-Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raquel, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?

That’s a great question! Work-life balance became significant when I became a first-time mom in 1996. The idea of not being in my son’s life because of work was unbearable. I chose in favor of my son and had the privilege of staying home with him and in 1998, bringing his sister into the world.

It wasn’t until my son was 3 years old and my daughter 1, that I realized they needed to be enrolled in a daycare program to support them in keeping active, creative, and social. While in daycare, my husband and I started a business.  He worked out in the field, while I ran the office from home. Needing to be productive, efficient, and profitable as the Vice President and CFO, while my kids where in daycare, I quickly learned to manage my time to spend quality time with them when I brought them back home, as I shifted gears to take care of my home life.

This routine continued all through High School as I constantly streamlined office operations that resulted in increased productivity and profits. In addition, I managed to be involved in all their school activities; transport them to and from school every day; and to plan various forms of adventures during their school vacations & time off.

At around 2005, I realized I was not prioritizing personal time for myself. Until that moment, I was not even aware that giving time to myself was an option. My priorities were my kids, my husband, and our business.

I feel that this new awareness is what led me to end my 20+ year marriage. There were so many things that I did not speak about and overlooked, but only because I did not even know myself.  I wanted to treat myself with the same level of consideration I had for my husband’s and my children’s needs and well-being.

Soon after my separation, I had to face what had been looming right below the surface of my health. I became aware that I had been suffering a health condition I had been oblivious to, but that I developed when I was a teenager. I ended up requiring a surgery that took over 12 months to heal, followed by an emergency procedure two years after.  This health issue continues to require regular medical supervision.

Now, after going through this lifelong roller coaster, I see the need for balance from a fresh new perspective. In my experience, the main pillars to focus on, for a balanced and successful life, are our finances, relationships, and health – we need to keep our attention simultaneously on all three because they are happening congruently, not linearly. Additionally, and just as important, we need to factor our core values, our passions, and our dreams to further reinforce and sustain the quality and the juiciness of our life.

What should our readers know about your business?

I believe that my willingness to be vulnerable and an open book about my life experiences is what sets me apart from others. My intuition guides me into customizing each coaching session, be it for an individual or a group setting, aside from delivering the course framework.  In addition, I strive to make the journey as simple as possible.

I am filled with pride when I see my clients’ inner light shine bright when they embody the work. At this phase in their journey, they also release their inner genius when they realize they are not limited, nor defined, by their circumstances, their history, or their conditions. As they achieve this level of life mastery, they can finally create authentic relationships, emotional and physical well-being, and career and financial success.

Getting to where I am today was not an easy task. As my mentor likes to say, I have gained two black belts – one in success and the other one in failure. The common denominator for earning both was my ability to connect with my vision, and course correct along the way.

I have been practicing and studying personal development for over 29 years; I have been a Reiki practitioner for 18 years; and have been coaching for 17 years. As with many, COVID-19 was my most recent challenge. The live transformational trainings I had been involved with came to a screeching halt. After some very deep soul searching, I decided to come out from behind the scenes and finally launch my own coaching practice utilizing a coaching program I had been delivering for the previous 5 years. My next step was to carefully contemplate on my “heroes’ journey” for insight to determine who my light and my genius were here to serve. That is how I came to recognize I support service professionals, entrepreneurs, and spiritual seekers wipe out burn out so they can create success in their career/business without sacrificing their personal relationships and wellbeing.

One of my life’s recurring lessons is that my life journey has prepared me and continues to prepare me to be in service to each of my clients.

What I want to remind the world is that no human is exempt from having a life with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It is up to us to decide who we want to be and how we want to play this game of life. Will we live it by default or by design? Who do we want to be? And how do we want to show up in our home, our community and in the world? There is a roadmap we can follow, with the right steps, in the right order, and with cheat codes to activate our inner light and genius to help us live a life we love. It is the one I follow and the one I coach.

If you are ready for living the balanced lifestyle of your dreams and are ready to do the work – then go surround yourself with a structured support that speaks to you. Find a life coach that, first and foremost, walks their talk; will hold you in your greatest possibility no matter how you show up, and no matter your considerations; and will use his or her method to support you tap into your Higher Self and to follow your own highest authority – YOU!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Oh boy! I suppose it depends how long my friend is in town for, but assuming one week … I’d start by creating two lists – One for the places we must visit. The second for the places we must eat at. This way my friend can decide the order he or she wants to explore and tour the city.

Places to Go:

  • Griffith Observatory to take pictures of the Hollywood Sign before sunset; star gaze into the night;  and visit the  planetarium.
    • Universal City Walk is a lively place with many options to eat, shop, and find entertainment.
    • Chinatown for its history and the cultural experience – it has many options to eat, to shop, and find entertainment.
    • Olvera Street is another historical landmark with authentic Mexican food and shopping of traditional goods.
    • TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood to experience the architecture and the presence of the theater alone, to watch a movie in the Imax theater, and of course, to visit the celebrities’ handprints and footprints in the open area in front of the theater.
    • Venice Beach is known for its unique “bohemian spirit.”  There are many murals, and if we are lucky, we can find street performers.  There are also an assortment of shops and restaurant bars to hang out and pass the time.
  • Places to Eat:
    • LA Prime Steakhouse on the 35th floor of the Westin Bonaventure Hotel for a delicious steak dinner and the best banana crème brulé in the world.
    • Urth Café in the Arts District. Anything you eat here is a yummy healthy experience, and has a cool vibe.
    • In-N-Out: You can’t be in Los Angeles and not have one of these classic burgers.
    • San Antonio Winery is a historical landmark in Los Angeles for wine tasting and to enjoy a delicious and cozy meal at their restaurant.
    • The Coffee Company a hidden gem in Westchester for their coffee, of course, their delicious and quality food, and friendly staff.
    • Grand Central Market in Downtown Los Angeles. The challenge here is to taste as many of the delicious food options offered by the variety of vendors without having to be rolled out of there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Yes indeed, credit gets to be given where credit is due. With that, I want to recognize my ex-husband, Michael Meyer. He was my life partner for 21 years, my business partner for 16 years and is the father of my two precious children. Together we did the absolute best to break generational patters from our families so that our kids can get the best opportunity to design a life that they love. My journey with him during our marriage, our business, and through our divorce is what created the content for me to transform to where I am today.

I also want to acknowledge my sister Maricela Hernandez for her unconditional support during my divorce. There are no words that I can weave together that can accurately describe what her support meant to me.

Regarding books, I have my own personal library. I have studied and read many books that I love. I have had many teachers, coaches and guides that have made an impact in the trajectory of my life. And there is one woman that I call my mentor that drove it home for me – her name is Mary Morrissey. She is the one who supported me into taking a deeper dive into the spiritual side of my nature – from where I began to experience results that I truly love. I was able to shift my tumultuous divorce to an amicable separation that allowed for my ex-husband and I to become friends and bring my family back to love.
