We had the good fortune of connecting with Raven and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raven, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Well, risks are a part of life. Everything we do has some level of risk involved. Without getting too deep, I used to really play it as safe as possible up until nearly 3 years ago when I had my second child. I had a very traumatic delivery and I am very lucky to still be standing here today. That’s when things changed. I stopped trying to make others comfortable, I started taking the risks that shook things up and it’s definitely made me a better person, parent, community member and leader. Taking risks has shaped who I am today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started a viral movement in August of 2021 that called on a popular streaming platform to change their features to protect marginalized creators. I’d like to think that was because of taking the risks I never would have prior to that moment where I understood my own mortality. I really started building my brand about being unapologetic in me. I knew the power I had in being who I am would create the spaces that I wanted to see. The moment I stopped trying to please everyone was the moment I really started to see myself succeed in the content creation space. None of it was easy and it’s still not. I am still forced to feel that I don’t belong in these spaces as a Black, queer, non-binary woman in these spaces. I still receive hate in my DMs or inboxes. When the #TwitchDoBetter movement was in full force I had to deal with people finding personal information and spreading it across the internet like wildfire. But I know what I stand for and the things I do are (and always will be) bigger than me.
I want my children and their children ( should they choose to have any) to be better. I don’t want future generations to have to inherent and endure what I and so many others have had to just for things like race, sexual orientation, gender identity and other things that are outside our control.

No one asks to be born.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Is it weird that I don’t really go out? Most of my time is spent (unfortunately) at my desk or at cons outside of the city and with the pandemic I haven’t been able to explore as much as I’d like.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My spouse & kids, Jess & Joy, who always give me strength, the people who always have my back (and I theirs) Logan, Lewi, Bre, Sam, Lonzo, Nla, Mothy, Rakim and Nikki. I am so grateful to be surrounded by so, so many amazing community members who genuinely care for one another and I’m happy to be a part of it.
