We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Ho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, how do you think about risk?
When I look back at my life/career, the biggest leaps forward have been due to a giant risk that I had taken. I’m from Brisbane, Australia. Making the move to New York was maybe the biggest risk of my life – and it’s paid off in spades. And then, I thought that I’d only be in New York for maybe a year or two – kind of a Gap Year equivalent. I’ve now been here for almost 6 years! Which is absolutely crazy. Nowadays, I am actively trying to face the things I find ‘scary’. There’s a saying I learnt in a clown class that is the mantra I live by when doing ‘scary things’ – “Louder than your Inner Critic, Faster than your Worry”. I think it’s the most beautiful way to make that first step into that risk, which let’s be honest, is always the hardest step to make. But if I go into that step speaking “Louder than my Inner Critic” and move “Faster than my Worry” then it doesn’t become so scary anymore.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an Actor, my whole craft is about reflecting life around me by filtering it through my unique lens of my personal experiences – and that’s what I feel sets me apart from others. My path to becoming an actor was a very windy one with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Firstly, I was born in Brisbane, Australia to a Vietnamese refugee and a Hong Kong immigrant – so the fact that I’m here is a miracle I don’t take for granted. And then I thought I might be a dancer for a while – I have danced from the age of 2. I trained in all styles of dance doing competitions and eisteddfods (yes – I was THAT competition kid). I was also a Dietitian for a hot minute (it’s what I studied in Undergrad). And then I moved across the world to New York for acting school – and I’ve now been here for almost 6 years. So despite only being on this earth for 20(something) years, I’ve lived a lot of life that I get to draw on for my craft. My heritage, my experiences – it all goes into the soup that makes me and my work uniquely me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooh ok. So, it’s New York. You’ve gotta do all the touristy things at least once. My personal favourites are Empire State Building or Top of the Rock. Walking the High Line or the Brooklyn Bridge are also both great. Go to Central Park – but skip Sheeps Meadow and head to the very top of the park and do the North Woods. It’s so pretty up there and for a moment you can actually forget you’re in the middle of a city. In terms of food, if you can, make the journey out to Flushing for some incredible Chinese food. If you have to stay on the island, there are some gems in Chinatown – my personal favourite is Wonton Noodle Garden for some really great Cantonese food. There are now about a thousand bubble tea places in K-town and I am on a mission to try them all. And obviously, I’m an actor. You’re in the theatre capital of the world! Make sure you see at least 1 Broadway/off-Broadway show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The entire reason I am where I am in my life is due to the love, support, encouragement, mentorship etc. of others. If I tried to give a shoutout to them all, we’d be here for hours. But I suppose if I was to give an extra special shoutout, it would be to my family (who are the absolute best!) and those on my inner circle (they know who they are ;)). The ones that have been with me while I experienced some huge highs, some low lows, and watched and cheered for me each step of the way.
